Overview
Carispezia, formally known for much of its history as Cassa di Risparmio della Spezia and later as Crédit Agricole Carispezia S.p.A., was an Italian savings bank associated with La Spezia and the surrounding region. Founded in 1842, it developed as a local banking institution before being transformed into a joint-stock banking company during the restructuring of Italy's savings-bank sector in the early 1990s. That reform separated the bank's commercial operations from the non-profit banking foundation that had historically owned it. The institution passed through several ownership and governance arrangements during the consolidation of Italian banking. In 1995, it was combined with the savings bank of Alessandria and the savings bank of Carrara within the Carinord Holding structure. Cariplo, the predecessor of an important part of Banca Intesa, became involved in the holding company, while Fondazione Carispezia retained a significant role. The structure was later reorganized, with the Alessandria business separated in 2002 and Carinord 2 created for the remaining interests in the Spezia and Carrara savings banks. Carispezia subsequently moved into the orbit of Banca CR Firenze. That bank completed the takeover of Carispezia in 2004, and the foundation reduced its direct ownership stake in 2006. Banca CR Firenze was then absorbed by Intesa Sanpaolo in 2007. Following the completion of privatization in 2008, Carispezia operated as a subsidiary rather than as an institution controlled through a looser network of foundations and holding companies. A decisive change came in 2010, when Crédit Agricole acquired Intesa Sanpaolo's investment in Carispezia, representing 80 percent of the bank's capital, together with a group of Italian branches. In 2011, the bank was placed under Cariparma, Crédit Agricole's Italian subsidiary. The Carispezia name continued for several years, including in the combined form Carispezia-Crédit Agricole, while the bank operated within the French group's Italian banking network. From 2016, Crédit Agricole Italia became the common customer-facing brand for the Italian banking group. This reduced the independent visibility of the Carispezia name and replaced its separate identity with the group's unified branding and website. Carispezia nevertheless remained associated with local banking and regional activity for part of this transition. The bank also sponsored Spezia Calcio during the 2017–18 Serie B season. In 2019, Crédit Agricole Carispezia was merged by incorporation into Crédit Agricole Italia, ending its existence as a separate legal banking entity and effectively closing the brand's independent corporate chapter.
History
Carispezia originated in 1842 as a local savings institution serving La Spezia and its surrounding territory. For much of its existence, the bank operated under the formal name Cassa di Risparmio della Spezia. Like other Italian savings banks, it combined a banking business with a foundation-based ownership model. Legislative changes in the early 1990s separated those functions: in 1992, the banking operation became a società per azioni, while the non-profit ownership role was assigned to a banking foundation. Cariplo entered the ownership structure as a minority shareholder with a nominal share-capital contribution denominated in Italian lire. The first major consolidation phase took place in 1995, when Carispezia was merged with the savings bank of Alessandria and the savings bank of Carrara. The foundations and Cariplo participated in Carinord Holding S.p.A., a new holding company that controlled 68.09 percent of Carispezia, while Fondazione Carispezia retained the balance directly. In 1998, Cariplo merged with Banco Ambrosiano Veneto to create Banca Intesa, and its interest in Carinord Holding passed to the new group. The arrangement was reorganized in 2002, when the Alessandria savings bank was separated from the structure and Carinord 2 S.p.A. was created. Banca Intesa held 41.14 percent of Carinord 2, Fondazione Carispezia held 31.83 percent, and Fondazione CR Carrara held 27.03 percent. The foundations therefore continued to exercise substantial influence, including through direct and indirect interests in Carispezia. In 2003, the structure was divided between Banca CR Firenze for the Spezia business and Banca Carige for the Carrara business. Banca Intesa received payment for its interest in Carinord 2. Banca CR Firenze completed its takeover of Carispezia in 2004. Fondazione Carispezia subsequently reduced its direct ownership to 20 percent in 2006. The next stage followed in 2007, when Intesa Sanpaolo, successor to Banca Intesa, merged with Banca CR Firenze through a share exchange. Privatization was completed in 2008, leaving Carispezia as a subsidiary of the banking group rather than a bank operating within a foundation-led ownership union. In 2010, Crédit Agricole acquired Intesa Sanpaolo's investment in Carispezia, equivalent to 80 percent of the bank's capital, for €740 million. The transaction also included 96 branches associated with the group. During Crédit Agricole's further development of its Italian operations in 2011, Carispezia was placed under Cariparma, the group's Italian subsidiary. Its local name survived in the brand expression Carispezia-Crédit Agricole, allowing the institution to retain regional recognition while joining the broader Crédit Agricole network. The branding strategy changed in 2016, when Crédit Agricole Italia became the common name used across the Italian banking group. Carispezia consequently lost much of its separate customer-facing identity. In the same period, the bank remained visible in its home region through community and sports activity, including sponsorship of Spezia Calcio during the 2017–18 Serie B season. Gianluca Borrelli served as general manager from 2018, succeeding Carlo Piana, who moved to Crédit Agricole FriulAdria. On 21 July 2019, Carispezia was merged by incorporation into Crédit Agricole Italia. The merger ended Carispezia as a separate legal bank and completed its transition from an independent regional savings-bank name to a historical brand within the Crédit Agricole organization.

Products and positioning
A regional Italian savings-bank brand that evolved into a local component of national and international banking groups, ultimately being integrated into Crédit Agricole Italia.
Retail bankingBanking services
Carispezia's core activity was regional retail banking under its savings-bank heritage. Its branch network served personal customers with deposit, payment, account-management and everyday banking services. After joining Crédit Agricole's Italian network, these activities were increasingly presented within the broader Carispezia-Crédit Agricole and Crédit Agricole Italia frameworks rather than as a fully independent local proposition.
Business bankingCommercial banking
As a regional bank, Carispezia also served companies and local economic activity through commercial banking relationships. The available reference material identifies the institution as a savings bank but does not provide a detailed product catalogue or specific named lending programs. Business services were ultimately incorporated into the wider Crédit Agricole Italia banking platform.
