Overview

Canal+ Liga was a Spanish pay-television sports channel focused chiefly on football, especially Spain's La Liga. It was launched on 29 August 2009 by Digital+, the subscription television platform later absorbed into Movistar+, as a direct response to Mediapro's Gol Televisión. The channel was designed to compete in the emerging Spanish premium digital-terrestrial and pay-TV market, where football rights were the principal driver of subscriptions. The immediate commercial context was Mediapro's plan to introduce Gol Televisión as a low-cost premium sports channel priced at approximately 18 euros per month. In response, Digital+ created Canal+ Liga and set its monthly price at approximately 15 euros, intensifying competition and contributing to lower consumer pricing. Canal+ Liga's programming centered on Spanish domestic football, while rights to other international competitions were distributed across sister channels within the Digital+ portfolio. The channel's first broadcast was the football programme El día del fútbol. Its first live match was a Segunda División fixture between Real Unión and Recreativo Huelva during the opening matchday of the 2009–10 season. In its early configuration, Canal+ Liga carried a mixture of Spanish football and selected international football rights. A high-definition feed, Canal+ Liga HD, was also offered. Digital+ reorganized its channel line-up in 2010. Following that change, Canal+ Liga concentrated more clearly on Spanish football and the UEFA Europa League, while international football was moved to related services such as Canal+ Fútbol, Sportmanía and Multideporte. A separate service, Canal+ Liga 2, was used primarily for Segunda División coverage and offered an HD version as Canal+ Liga 2 HD. Canal+ Liga 2 retained exclusive coverage of the Spanish second tier for part of its existence, including through the 2015–16 season. The Canal+ Liga brand ended during the restructuring of Spanish football broadcasting rights. Mediapro secured the domestic La Liga television rights for the following three seasons and subsequently introduced beIN LaLiga in partnership with Al Jazeera. Telefónica also removed the Canal+ brand from its television offering in August 2016. Canal+ Liga ceased broadcasting on 22 August 2016, making it a discontinued sports television brand rather than an active channel.

History

Canal+ Liga emerged in Spain's increasingly competitive football-pay-TV market in 2009. Mediapro was preparing Gol Televisión, a premium digital-terrestrial and subscription channel intended to make a broad package of football available at a relatively accessible monthly price. Digital+, the subscription platform associated with the Canal+ brand in Spain, responded by creating Canal+ Liga as a dedicated football service. The channel began broadcasting on 29 August 2009. Its launch price was approximately 15 euros per month, undercutting the planned price of Gol Televisión and forcing the new football-channel market toward more competitive pricing. Canal+ Liga's opening programme was El día del fútbol, and its first match was a Segunda División game between Real Unión and Recreativo Huelva during the first matchday of the 2009–10 campaign. At launch, the service combined Spanish domestic football with selected international football. It also had a high-definition version, Canal+ Liga HD. The channel's role became more specialized after a Digital+ programming reorganization in 2010. Spanish football and the UEFA Europa League became the core content associated with Canal+ Liga, while international football was increasingly assigned to sister services including Canal+ Fútbol, Sportmanía and Multideporte. The broader Canal+ Liga family included Canal+ Liga 2, a related channel dedicated primarily to Spain's Segunda División. Canal+ Liga 2 also had an HD feed and held exclusive coverage of the second tier for part of its life, including the 2015–16 season. Together, the channels formed part of Digital+'s football-focused subscription offering. The brand's existence depended heavily on the distribution of Spanish football rights. After Mediapro secured the La Liga rights for the subsequent three seasons, it launched beIN LaLiga in association with Al Jazeera. Telefónica's television operation also retired the Canal+ name during August 2016 as its service was reorganized under the Movistar+ identity. Canal+ Liga stopped broadcasting on 22 August 2016. It therefore represents a discontinued Spanish sports-channel brand whose main historical significance lies in the 2009–2016 competition between Digital+/Telefónica and Mediapro over televised football.
