Overview
Cadence Design Systems is an American multinational technology company headquartered in San Jose, California. It is best known for electronic design automation (EDA), the software, hardware, and semiconductor intellectual property used to create, verify, simulate, and manufacture integrated circuits, systems-on-chip, chiplets, packages, and printed circuit boards. Its tools are used across the semiconductor value chain, from custom analog and radio-frequency design through digital synthesis, place and route, verification, emulation, physical signoff, and system-level analysis. History
Cadence's origins lie in the first generation of Silicon Valley EDA companies. Solomon Design Automation was established in San Jose in 1983 by James Solomon, Richard Newton, and Alberto Sangiovanni-Vincentelli. ECAD, founded in 1982 by Ping Chao, Glen Antle, and Paul Huang, developed complementary computer-aided design technology and became a public company. The two businesses merged in 1988 to form Cadence Design Systems, with Joseph Costello serving as president and chief executive officer. The new company used acquisitions to assemble a broader design flow. Gateway Design Automation, acquired in 1989, contributed technology associated with digital simulation. Automated Systems was acquired in 1990 and added board-design capability. In 1991, Cadence acquired Valid Logic Systems, a major transaction that expanded its position in logic design and verification. Further acquisitions during the 1990s included High Level Design Systems, Ambit Design Systems, OrCAD, and Quickturn Design Systems. Quickturn was especially important because its emulation technology later became part of Cadence's hardware-verification business. After Costello left in 1997, Jack Harding and Ray Bingham led the company in succession. Cadence continued consolidating the fragmented EDA market and developing tools for system-on-chip design. Ambit's technology strengthened synthesis and implementation, while OrCAD gave Cadence a stronger presence among smaller PCB and electronics-design teams. During the early 2000s, the company acquired businesses such as Silicon Perspective, Verplex, and Celestry Design, partly reinforcing its response to Synopsys's growing competitive position. Mike Fister became chief executive in 2004. Cadence expanded through additional acquisitions, including Verisity, and used significant capital for share repurchases. The company explored strategic alternatives during the decade, including a proposed acquisition of Mentor Graphics that was withdrawn in 2008. Following Fister's departure, board member Lip-Bu Tan first became acting chief executive and was subsequently confirmed as president and CEO in 2009. Tan's tenure emphasized a more integrated product strategy, stronger execution, and expansion beyond isolated point tools. Cadence acquired Altos Design Automation in 2011, Cosmic Circuits and Tensilica in 2013, Forte Design Systems in 2014, and AWR Corporation in 2019. These transactions broadened the portfolio across semiconductor IP, high-level synthesis, processor cores, wireless and radio-frequency design, and system-level engineering. The company introduced or expanded major platforms during the 2010s and early 2020s. Spectre X addressed highly parallel circuit simulation; Xcelium provided multicore simulation; JasperGold added machine-learning assistance to formal verification; Palladium and Protium supported hardware emulation and FPGA prototyping; and Genus, Innovus, Tempus, Voltus, and related products covered synthesis, implementation, timing, power, extraction, and signoff. Cadence also developed Clarity for electromagnetic analysis and Celsius for thermal analysis. From 2020 onward, Cadence increasingly presented itself as a computational software company. It expanded into computational fluid dynamics, multiphysics, digital twins, and engineering optimization through acquisitions and internal development. It added system-analysis assets from NUMECA and acquired Pointwise, while its Fidelity and related products addressed fluid simulation and mesh generation. In 2021, Anirudh Devgan became president and CEO, succeeding Lip-Bu Tan, who later left the executive-chairman and board roles in 2023. Cadence acquired OpenEye Scientific Software in 2022, creating the OpenEye Cadence Molecular Sciences business and extending the company into molecular simulation and drug discovery. It subsequently acquired businesses from Rambus, BETA CAE Systems, and other technology providers. In 2024 it introduced the Millennium M1 enterprise multiphysics platform, combining specialized hardware and software for computational-fluid-dynamics workloads and digital-twin development. In 2025 it announced a proposed acquisition of Secure-IC and a larger proposed transaction involving Hexagon's design and engineering business, including MSC Software, subject to applicable conditions. Cadence's international business has also been shaped by technology policy. Reports concerning the use of American EDA tools in Chinese military-linked research prompted calls for tighter controls, and later U.S. licensing restrictions affected exports to China. These events illustrate the dual-use character of advanced design software: the same technologies support commercial chips, vehicles, communications equipment, aerospace systems, and other products while also attracting national-security scrutiny.
