An international business-to-business distribution and outsourcing group supplying essential non-food products and services.

Overview
Bunzl is a British multinational distribution and outsourcing group headquartered in London. Its modern business supplies essential non-food products to organizations rather than selling primarily to household consumers. The group serves foodservice operators, food retailers and processors, cleaning contractors, healthcare organizations, convenience stores, hospitality businesses, and other commercial and public-sector customers. Its product categories include food and retail packaging, disposable tableware, cleaning and hygiene supplies, personal protective equipment, safety products, catering equipment, first-aid products, carrier bags, labelling and point-of-sale materials, and related operating consumables. The company’s roots extend to 1854, when Moritz Bunzl registered a haberdashery business in Pozsony, then within the Habsburg monarchy and now Bratislava, Slovakia. The Bunzl family later developed paper manufacturing activities in Austria, including operations associated with Bunzl & Biach. During the interwar period, the group became involved in cigarette-filter technology. Boris Aivaz’s filter process was developed in cooperation with a Bunzl subsidiary, and the wider adoption of filter-tip cigarette machinery created a major growth opportunity after the Second World War. The British company that evolved into today’s group was established in 1940 as Tissue Papers Limited by members of the Bunzl family who had moved from Austria to Britain after the Anschluss and the seizure of Jewish-owned assets. The company manufactured cigarette filters, tissue paper and crepe paper, later becoming an international distributor for Bunzl & Biach’s paper and pulp products. It changed its name to Bunzl Pulp & Paper in 1952. Filter production expanded rapidly during the 1950s, and the company became a major supplier to British tobacco companies. Bunzl became a public company on the London Stock Exchange in 1957. As the growth of filter cigarettes slowed and tobacco manufacturers increasingly brought filter production in-house, the group diversified into paper, plastics, fibres, adhesive tape, data processing and other activities. This diversification produced mixed results and did not resolve the longer-term pressure on the manufacturing businesses. From the early 1980s, under new leadership, Bunzl began a fundamental shift toward distribution through acquisitions, particularly in North America and in disposable food packaging. During the 1990s and early 2000s, the group sold manufacturing, paper merchanting, building-materials, foodservice and other non-core operations. The sale of its historic paper interests and the 2005 spin-off of Filtrona completed the transformation from a diversified materials manufacturer into a focused distribution company. Since then, Bunzl has pursued a combination of organic development and acquisitions, adding specialist distributors in foodservice, cleaning and hygiene, personal protection, healthcare, packaging and safety. Bunzl is organized geographically into North America, the United Kingdom and Ireland, Continental Europe, and the rest of the world, principally Australasia. North America is its largest broad geographic business, while foodservice and food retail are among its most important customer markets. The group’s distribution model emphasizes local customer relationships, broad product ranges, procurement scale, inventory availability and outsourced purchasing support. Its current identity is therefore less about a single consumer-facing product and more about helping commercial customers obtain the everyday supplies required to operate. Bunzl remains listed in London and has been a constituent of the FTSE 100 Index.
History
Bunzl’s history combines Central European family enterprise, industrial manufacturing and a later transformation into a global distribution group. The family story begins in 1854, when Moritz Bunzl registered a haberdashery business in Pozsony. In 1883, his sons Max, Ludwig and Julius renamed the enterprise Bunzl & Biach and moved its headquarters to Vienna. The business entered paper manufacturing in the late nineteenth century, including production associated with mills at Ortmann and Wattens. A major technological turning point came through the development of cigarette filters. Hungarian inventor Boris Aivaz worked with a Bunzl subsidiary during the 1920s on a process using crepe paper and related cellulose materials. Early commercial adoption was limited because cigarette manufacturers lacked suitable machinery, but the spread of filter-tip cigarette production in the 1930s and after the Second World War created strong demand. The Bunzl family developed British interests as filter-making technology became more practical. The present British company was established in 1940 under the name Tissue Papers Limited by Martin, Hugo and George Bunzl, who had emigrated from Austria after the Anschluss. It manufactured cigarette filters and tissue and crepe papers. After the war, the British business reclaimed or reconnected with parts of the family’s continental industrial interests and became a distributor for Bunzl & Biach’s paper and pulp products. The company adopted the name Bunzl Pulp & Paper in 1952 and expanded internationally during the following decade, including filter production in South Africa and the creation of American Filtrona in the United States. Bunzl listed approximately 30% of its shares on the London Stock Exchange in 1957, while the family retained majority control for a further period. The company benefited from the rapid adoption of filtered cigarettes, becoming a supplier to major British tobacco companies. However, its growth model became vulnerable when filter-cigarette demand matured and tobacco manufacturers increasingly produced filters internally. In 1969, the company recorded its first profit decline as a public company. Its market position in cigarette filters was also examined by the Monopolies and Mergers Commission after a supplier relationship with Courtaulds changed; the inquiry found that Bunzl had held, but had not abused, a monopolistic position. The response was diversification. Bunzl acquired the original Austrian Bunzl & Biach business in 1970 and added paper, plastics, fibres and adhesive-tape activities. It also experimented with data-processing services. These ventures did not provide a durable solution to falling manufacturing profitability. At the beginning of the 1980s, chief executive James White initiated a strategic redirection. Bunzl & Biach and related paper mills were sold, and the company began acquiring distributors, starting with Jersey Paper in the United States in 1981. The distribution strategy expanded through the 1980s and 1990s in North America, Europe and Australia. Food packaging, foodservice supplies, package delivery and other outsourced operating services became increasingly important. Bunzl entered the FTSE 100 in 1986. Under Anthony Habgood, who became chief executive in 1991, the group accelerated the disposal of non-core assets. Foodservice, paper merchanting and building-material businesses were sold by 1994, while the acquisition of American Filtrona in 1997 consolidated plastics, fibres and filter operations. Bunzl acquired Koch Supplies in 2001 and sold its remaining fine-paper distribution arm in 2002. By then, the group had narrowed to Outsourcing Services and Filtrona. The 2005 spin-off of Filtrona removed the last major manufacturing connection and left Bunzl as a distribution-focused company. Michael Roney became chief executive in 2005, with Habgood becoming chairman. From 2006 onward, Bunzl used acquisitions to broaden its specialist distribution network. Keenpac added luxury packaging, while McCordick Glove & Safety and Atlas Health Care strengthened safety and medical-supply distribution. Planet Clean expanded cleaning and hygiene capabilities in Canada. Later acquisitions included a majority stake in hygi.de, Safety First Group and an 80% stake in Nisbets. The company now operates through geographic business units covering North America, the United Kingdom and Ireland, Continental Europe and the rest of the world, principally Australasia. Its strategic role is to combine procurement scale and broad product availability with local distribution and customer service for organizations that require recurring, essential non-food supplies.
