History
Bruker was established on September 7, 1960, in Karlsruhe, Germany, as Bruker-Physik AG. The founding group included Günther Laukien, then a professor at the University of Karlsruhe, and Emil Bruker, whose name became part of the corporate identity. The company initially focused on nuclear magnetic resonance and electron-magnetic-resonance spectroscopy equipment, serving the expanding market for advanced laboratory research. During the 1960s, Bruker grew rapidly and developed a reputation for engineering sophisticated NMR systems. Its HFX 90 system was an early notable product, using semiconductor transistors and offering three independent channels. In 1964, Bruker acquired the NMR division of Swiss company Trüb-Täuber. The company also began building a United States presence after shipping NMR systems to Yale University in 1968 and subsequently opening an office in Elmsford, New York. In 2008, after a lengthy corporate reorganization, Bruker's divisions were consolidated under a more unified Bruker Corporation structure. In 2010, the company created a Chemical Analysis Division in Fremont, California, using product lines obtained from the former Varian business. These included inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry and gas-chromatography-related products. Bruker continued to broaden its life-science and imaging presence through transactions involving Michrom Bioresources, SkyScan, Prairie Technologies and selected Carestream Health assets. The company pursued further expansion in the 2010s. It acquired or invested in businesses including Oncovision's preclinical PET imaging activities, Oxford Instruments Superconducting Technology, Hysitron, XGLab, Luxendo, Alicona and PMOD Technologies. Alicona strengthened Bruker's industrial metrology capabilities through focus-variation technology. Canopy Biosciences, acquired in 2020, added capabilities in single-cell and spatial biology. In 2022, Bruker acquired Optimal Group and Neurescence, and announced the acquisition of Inscopix, a developer of miniaturized neuroscience microscopy systems. More recent transactions extended Bruker's reach into cellular analysis, spatial biology and clinical diagnostics. The company acquired PhenomeX in 2023, made a majority investment in MIRO Analytical, acquired NanoString Technologies assets in 2024, and announced the acquisition of ELITechGroup in the same year.
