Overview
Brains Brewery, formally S. A. Brain & Company Ltd., is a family-owned regional brewer based in Cardiff, Wales. Samuel Arthur Brain, a brewer from Bristol, acquired the historic Cardiff brewery with his uncle Joseph Benjamin Brain in 1882. The site had operated as a brewery since at least the early nineteenth century and incorporated older buildings, including one dating from 1713. At acquisition, the business produced roughly 100 barrels of beer a week and supplied 11 pubs; by 1900, production had reached about 1,000 barrels a week and the estate had expanded to around 80 public houses. The company became a limited company in 1897 and developed into one of Wales's most prominent independent brewers. Its core business has traditionally combined brewing with ownership or operation of pubs, particularly in Cardiff and South Wales. Brains's best-known beer is Brains SA, a light-coloured, malty best bitter commonly associated with Cardiff pub culture. Other beers in the portfolio have included Brains Bitter, Brains Dark, Brains IPA, SA Gold, Brains Black stout, Barry Island IPA and Bayside Lager. The company also maintains or has maintained heritage brands acquired through earlier brewery transactions, notably Buckley's from Llanelli and Hancock's from the former Hancock's Brewery. Brains expanded through acquisitions in the late twentieth century. It acquired Crown Buckley Brewery in Llanelli in 1997, subsequently transferring production to Cardiff, and bought the former Hancock's Brewery site south of Cardiff Central railway station in 1999. Brewing operations moved there in 2000, while the original city-centre brewery was later redeveloped as the Old Brewery Quarter, a mixed leisure, hospitality and residential development. The business diversified beyond beer in 2011 by acquiring the Cardiff-based Coffee#1 chain. Following a strategic review, Brains sold a 70 percent stake to Caffè Nero in 2019 and exited its remaining investment in 2022. The brewer also invested in modern production capacity: the Dragon Brewery at Pacific Business Park in Tremorfa opened in 2019. Brains historically controlled a large pub estate, reaching more than 250 pubs across South Wales, Mid Wales and parts of the West Country. Financial pressure associated with the COVID-19 period led to a restructuring of the pub business. In 2020, operation of 156 pubs was transferred to Marston's through a long lease-back arrangement, and in 2022 the freehold and leasehold interests in 95 pubs were sold to Song Capital. The company stated in 2023 that it had recovered from the debt that had prompted the sale. Despite reducing its estate, Brains remains an active Welsh brewing business whose identity is closely connected with Cardiff, Welsh sporting culture and traditional cask beer.
History
The brewery associated with Brains is believed to be Cardiff's oldest. The original premises included a building dating from 1713, and brewing was taking place there by at least 1822. In 1882, Samuel Arthur Brain, a Bristol brewer, acquired the business with his uncle Joseph Benjamin Brain. The company initially produced approximately 100 barrels per week and operated 11 pubs. Expansion followed rapidly: by 1900, output was about 1,000 barrels a week and the company supplied around 80 public houses. S. A. Brain & Co Ltd was incorporated in April 1897, when the business was purchased for £350,000. The original brewery was expanded in 1914 with construction of a new facility on St Mary Street. Over the following decades, Brains became a major regional brewer and pub operator, with a particular concentration in Cardiff and South Wales. Its beer portfolio developed around traditional Welsh cask styles, especially bitter, best bitter, mild and stout. Brains SA became the company's signature beer, while Brains Bitter became a common draught beer in Cardiff pubs. The late twentieth century brought consolidation and brand expansion. Brains acquired the Llanelli-based Crown Buckley Brewery in 1997, although the Llanelli brewery was closed and production moved to Cardiff. The company acquired the former Hancock's Brewery in 1999. Brewing moved to the Hancock's site south of Cardiff Central railway station in 2000. The former city-centre premises were subsequently redeveloped, and in 2003 the Old Brewery Quarter opened as a mixed leisure, hospitality and residential scheme. Brains expanded its portfolio through the retained Buckley's and Hancock's names. Buckley's beers included Buckley's Bitter, Buckley's IPA and Rev. James, while Hancock's HB preserved a long-established session bitter associated with the former Hancock's business. The brewer also introduced newer products, including SA Gold, Brains Black stout, Barry Island IPA and Bayside Lager, alongside seasonal beers connected with St David's Day, Welsh rugby and other local traditions. The company diversified into retail hospitality in 2011 by purchasing Coffee#1, a Cardiff-origin coffee-shop chain. It later reduced and then ended that investment: Caffè Nero acquired a 70 percent stake in 2019, and Brains sold its remaining stake in 2022. In brewing, the company invested in the Dragon Brewery at Tremorfa, Cardiff, which opened in 2019. Brains's pub estate was an important part of its business model. At its height the company controlled more than 250 pubs across South Wales, Mid Wales and the West Country. The economic effects of the COVID-19 period contributed to debt pressures and a major restructuring. In December 2020, the operation of 156 pubs was transferred to Marston's under a 25-year lease-back arrangement. In May 2022, Brains sold the freehold and leasehold interests in 95 pubs to Song Capital, using the proceeds to repay existing debt. In 2023, the company said it had recovered from the debt that had driven the disposals. Ownership has remained with the Brain family. Chris Brain served as chairman until 2009, after which John Rhys, a great-great-grandson of founder Samuel Arthur Brain, led the company. Brains's public identity has also been shaped by its sponsorship of Welsh rugby, cricket and rugby league, making the brand a prominent symbol of Welsh regional brewing even as its estate and business activities have changed.
