History
Boston Dynamics grew out of Marc Raibert's research into legged locomotion at MIT and Carnegie Mellon University. Raibert founded the company in 1992 as a spin-off from MIT's Leg Laboratory. Nancy Cornelius joined as the first employee and later held finance and engineering leadership roles, while Robert Playter joined shortly afterward after completing his doctoral work. The company's early activities included work on DI-Guy, a software product for realistic human simulation, and interactive three-dimensional training environments developed under defense-related contracts. The DI-Guy product line was transferred to VT MÄK before the Google acquisition. The company then concentrated on physical robots capable of navigating difficult environments.
