Overview
BOE Technology Group Co., Ltd., also known as Jingdongfang, is a Chinese technology company whose principal activities center on semiconductor displays and related electronic components. The company describes its broader business around interface devices, smart Internet-of-Things systems, and smart medicine and engineering integration. Its best-known products are display panels used in televisions, monitors, notebook computers, tablets, smartphones, vehicles and other information devices. BOE was established in April 1993 as Beijing Oriental Electronics Group, with Wang Dongsheng associated with its founding. Its predecessor was the state-owned Beijing Electron Tube Factory. The company entered the capital markets through a B-share listing on the Shenzhen Stock Exchange in 1997 and adopted the BOE Technology Group name in 2001. Early expansion was driven by acquisitions and heavy investment in flat-panel manufacturing. BOE purchased SK Hynix's STN-LCD and OLED activities and later acquired the company's Hydis flat-panel display business, helping it build technical capabilities in thin-film-transistor and other display technologies. A major turning point was the construction of a fifth-generation LCD line in Beijing's Yizhuang Special Development Zone. The project required substantial financing involving China Development Bank, the Beijing municipal government and a group of commercial banks. BOE subsequently expanded production capacity through projects and investments in Hefei, Chengdu, Chongqing, Fuzhou, Mianyang, Wuhan, Kunming, Suzhou, Ordos and Gu'an. Local-government investment played an important role in the expansion of China's display-manufacturing industry, and Hefei became one of BOE's important production bases. The company broadened its international and technological footprint during the 2010s. It established research, sales and subsidiary operations in Japan, the United States, Germany, India, the Middle East, Brazil, Indonesia and South Africa. It also acquired or invested in businesses connected with automotive displays, electronic shelf labels, hospitals and emerging display technologies. Partnerships with Universal Display Corporation, Kopin, Olightek and Rohinni supported work in phosphorescent OLED materials, micro-displays, MicroLED and Mini LED backlighting. BOE competes in a capital-intensive market against companies including Samsung Display, LG Display and other Chinese panel manufacturers. It became a major supplier of large-area LCD panels and expanded its OLED business for mobile devices and foldable products. BOE panels have been used in products from consumer-electronics brands including Huawei and Hisense, and the company has also been reported as a supplier in Apple's display supply chain. Its competitive position reflects manufacturing scale, government-supported industrial investment, process development and a large patent portfolio. WIPO's 2023 PCT review ranked BOE fifth worldwide by published PCT patent applications, with 2,152 applications. Today, BOE remains active as a global display and IoT technology group. History
BOE's institutional roots lie in Beijing Electron Tube Factory, a state-owned electronics enterprise. In April 1993, Beijing Oriental Electronics Group was established, with Wang Dongsheng identified as its founder. The business entered the Shenzhen Stock Exchange through a B-share listing in 1997 and was renamed BOE Technology Group Co., Ltd. in 2001. The company's early transformation was closely connected with the development of China's flat-panel-display industry. BOE acquired SK Hynix's STN-LCD and OLED businesses and later purchased the Hydis flat-panel-display operations for approximately US$380 million. These transactions gave BOE additional technical assets and manufacturing experience as the global market shifted from traditional cathode-ray and smaller display technologies toward thin, flat screens. BOE then undertook major domestic capacity expansion. It constructed a fifth-generation LCD production line in Beijing's Yizhuang Special Development Zone. The project was supported by extensive financing involving China Development Bank, the Beijing municipal government and nine banks. In 2008, the Hefei local government invested approximately US$3.5 billion for a controlling ownership stake, helping establish Hefei as a major BOE manufacturing location and as a wider optoelectronics cluster. During the late 2000s and 2010s, BOE diversified geographically and technologically. It founded BOE Energy Technology in 2009 to explore photovoltaics, acquired display-related assets in Suzhou and Taiwan in 2010, and established a Japanese branch and Tokyo research center in 2011. A United States branch and Silicon Valley research center followed in 2012, while a Frankfurt subsidiary was established in 2014. BOE expanded into health care through the acquisition of OASIS International Hospital in 2015, and it entered automotive displays through the acquisition of Varitronix in 2016. Further operations were established in New Delhi, Dubai, São Paulo, Jakarta and Johannesburg. The group continued to build capabilities in OLED and newer display categories. In 2017 it announced a long-term arrangement under which Universal Display Corporation would supply phosphorescent OLED materials. In 2018 BOE acquired SES-imagotag and formed a micro-display joint venture with Kopin and Olightek. In 2019 it formed a joint venture with Rohinni for MicroLED and Mini LED backlighting. Its panels appeared in products including Huawei's Mate 20 Pro and foldable-phone programs, while BOE panels were also used in Hisense's U9E dual-LCD television design. BOE's market position strengthened as Chinese manufacturers increased their share of global LCD production. Industry-consulting data cited in the reference material indicated that BOE shipped more television and monitor panels than LG Display in 2018 on a unit basis, although rankings varied depending on the measurement used, such as units, area, application or technology. BOE also became a significant smartphone OLED supplier and was reported to enter Apple's supply chain from 2021. In the 2020s, BOE continued investing in high-refresh-rate, flexible, OLED, automotive and emerging display technologies. Its manufacturing network covered major Chinese electronics centers including Beijing, Hefei, Chengdu, Chongqing, Fuzhou, Mianyang, Wuhan, Kunming, Suzhou, Ordos and Gu'an. By 2024, Hefei hosted three BOE production lines. The group also maintained global research and marketing activity in Asia, North America, Europe, the Middle East, Africa and South America. BOE's patent activity, manufacturing scale and relationships with major device brands have made it one of the most important Chinese participants in the global display industry.
