BMG Poland

BMG Poland Sp. z o.o. was the Polish subsidiary of Bertelsmann Music Group and operated from Warsaw in the Polish recorded-music market. Established in 1993, it combined the resources and international reach of the BMG group with local repertoire development, label management, music marketing and distribution. Its activity formed part of the rapid restructuring of Poland’s legal recorded-music industry after the end of the communist period, when international music companies and locally owned labels competed to build national catalogues and commercial distribution networks. A major turning point came in 1996, when BMG Poland acquired Zic Zac, an independent label owned by musician Marek Kościkiewicz of De Mono. Zic Zac reportedly held approximately 10 percent of the Polish music market at the time and had a roster that included Kayah, Urszula Kasprzak, Andrzej Piaseczny, Formacja Nieżywych Schabuff, Elektryczne Gitary and Varius Manx. Following the acquisition, Zic Zac was reorganized as a label subsidiary within the BMG Poland structure. Kościkiewicz became chief executive of BMG Poland, linking the company’s local operations with the creative and commercial expertise of an established Polish music entrepreneur. BMG Poland subsequently expanded its label portfolio. In 2001, the company opened Sissy Records, a subsidiary focused on a range of alternative, electronic and independent-oriented artists. Its catalogue included Andrzej Smolik, Cool Kids of Death, Futro, Jacek Lachowicz, Lenny Valentino, Novika, Old Time Radio and Ścianka.
