Overview
BLACK+DECKER is an American consumer and home-improvement brand whose roots extend to the Black & Decker Manufacturing Company, established in Baltimore in 1910 by S. Duncan Black and Alonzo G. Decker. The founders began as partners in a small machine shop, producing specialized machinery before developing a broader business in portable power equipment. The company’s most consequential early innovation was its 1917 patent for a hand-held electric drill combining a pistol grip with a trigger switch. That format helped make powered drilling more controllable and practical, and became an important foundation for the company’s identity in portable tools. The business expanded through manufacturing growth, acquisitions, and product diversification. It opened its first factory in Towson, Maryland, in 1917 and acquired the Van Dorn Electric Tool Company in 1928. Its stock began trading on the New York Stock Exchange in 1936. During the Second World War, the company received an Army-Navy “E” Award for production. Black & Decker later broadened its portfolio through acquisitions and licensing, including the 1960 purchase of DeWalt and the 1989 acquisition of Emhart Corporation, which brought a range of hardware and fastening brands into the corporate portfolio. Its cordless-tool work was also associated with equipment supplied for NASA’s Gemini and Apollo programs, although the current BLACK+DECKER consumer brand should be distinguished from the company’s other professional and industrial brands. In 2010, Black & Decker merged with The Stanley Works to create Stanley Black & Decker. BLACK+DECKER continued as a wholly owned brand within the combined company rather than remaining an independent listed corporation. The group subsequently reorganized its portfolio. In 2012 it sold its Hardware and Home Improvement group, including lock-related assets, to Spectrum Brands. In 2014, the consumer brand adopted the stylized BLACK+DECKER name, replacing the ampersand with a plus sign in its principal branding. Today, BLACK+DECKER is primarily positioned toward household users, do-it-yourself customers, and general home-improvement applications. Its range includes cordless and corded power tools, garden equipment, tool accessories, storage and workshop products, selected hand tools, and household appliances in markets where those products are licensed or distributed. The brand is generally more accessible and consumer-oriented than Stanley Black & Decker’s professional-focused DEWALT offering. It operates internationally through the parent group, local distributors, retail partners, and market-specific licensing arrangements. In India, Stovekraft entered a licensing arrangement to sell BLACK+DECKER products, while Indkal Technologies was identified as a manufacturer and seller of BLACK+DECKER-branded smart televisions in the Indian market in 2025.
History
BLACK+DECKER was founded in September 1910 in Baltimore, Maryland, by S. Duncan Black and Alonzo G. Decker. The founders began in a rented machine shop and initially made industrial products, including equipment designed for other manufacturers. Their own product development soon shifted the company toward portable electric tools. During the 1910s, Black & Decker developed a portable electric drill with a pistol-grip configuration. The design made electric drilling easier to control and helped establish the company as an important early participant in the modern power-tool industry. A manufacturing plant was established in Towson, Maryland, in 1917, and the business began international expansion with a Canadian subsidiary in the 1920s. The company continued to expand its tool range and international operations through the middle of the twentieth century. In 1960, it acquired DeWalt from American Machine and Foundry. DeWalt later became a leading professional tool brand within the broader corporate portfolio. In 1975, leadership passed outside the founding family for the first time when Francis P. Lucier succeeded Alonzo G. Decker Jr. as chairman. Black & Decker broadened its consumer activities in 1984 by acquiring General Electric's small-appliance business, and in 1985 it adopted the corporate name The Black & Decker Corporation. Nolan D. Archibald became chief executive in 1986. For much of its independent history, Black & Decker operated as a public manufacturer serving professional users, homeowners, and do-it-yourself customers. Its products expanded from drills and other power tools into accessories, lawn and garden equipment, cleaning appliances, and small household products. The brand developed a particularly broad consumer identity, making its products available through mass retailers and home-improvement channels as well as specialist outlets. The company entered a major strategic transition in 2009, when The Stanley Works announced an agreement to combine with Black & Decker in an all-stock transaction valued at approximately $4.5 billion. The transaction was completed on March 12, 2010, and the combined company became Stanley Black & Decker. BLACK+DECKER was retained as a principal brand, while the new group organized its portfolio to serve distinct consumer, professional, and industrial markets. After the merger, BLACK+DECKER generally occupied the accessible consumer and household segment. Its products have included cordless and corded drills, drivers, saws, sanders, grinders, work lights, batteries, chargers, lawn equipment, vacuums, and other cleaning or household appliances. Product lines and branding differ by market, and not every historical product remains available. The brand remains active under Stanley Black & Decker. Its history is therefore best understood as both an independent American toolmaker and a continuing consumer brand within a diversified tools and outdoor-products group. The corporation has periodically simplified its portfolio and focused investment on core tools and outdoor businesses, while BLACK+DECKER continues to draw on its recognition in home improvement and everyday household maintenance.
