Overview
Bigelow Aerospace was a privately funded American space technology company founded by hotel entrepreneur Robert Bigelow in 1998. Based in North Las Vegas, Nevada, it designed and manufactured expandable spacecraft and habitat modules intended to provide more usable volume in orbit than conventional rigid spacecraft of comparable launch mass. The company was financed largely from Bigelow's ownership of Budget Suites of America and pursued a commercial model based on selling or leasing access to privately operated orbital facilities. The company's work built on NASA research into TransHab, an inflatable habitat concept that was cancelled after delays and budget pressures affected the International Space Station program in the late 1990s. Bigelow licensed relevant technology from NASA in 2000 and subsequently entered into Space Act agreements that gave it commercial rights relating to several expandable-module technologies. It redesigned the architecture and invested heavily in proprietary material and structural improvements, including multilayer protective fabrics incorporating Vectran. The proposed advantages included lower launch mass, greater internal volume after deployment, and potentially improved resistance to micrometeoroid and orbital-debris impacts. Bigelow Aerospace demonstrated its technology through two uncrewed orbital prototypes. Genesis I launched in July 2006, followed by Genesis II in June 2007. BEAM was launched on SpaceX's CRS-8 mission in April 2016, attached to the station later that month, and inflated in May 2016. It demonstrated the use of an expandable module as an attached station element and remained at the ISS for several years. NASA later took ownership of the module in December 2021. Bigelow's larger commercial concepts included the Sundancer and B330 habitats. The B330 was designed as a substantially larger inflatable module for research, manufacturing, government missions, and possible commercial accommodation. The company proposed combining modules into private space stations, including the planned BA330 Alpha concept, and explored markets such as biotechnology, pharmaceuticals, university research, entertainment, defense, civil government, and space tourism. In 2010 it announced agreements or understandings involving potential users from several countries, and in 2018 created Bigelow Space Operations to market and manage future orbital facilities. The program was repeatedly affected by the limited availability and delayed maturation of commercial crew transportation. Bigelow reduced its workforce in 2011, later rebuilt staffing, and made further reductions in 2016 after closing a propulsion facility in Huntsville, Alabama. In March 2020, during the COVID-19 pandemic, the company laid off all 88 employees and ceased active operations. It has remained dormant and is generally treated as defunct. Bigelow Aerospace's principal legacy is the demonstration that expandable habitat technology could be deployed and operated in orbit, especially through BEAM, even though its proposed commercial space-station network was never completed.
History
Bigelow Aerospace originated in Robert Bigelow's interest in developing privately operated space habitats. NASA's TransHab program had explored inflatable structures for the International Space Station, but the project was cancelled after schedule and budget difficulties. In 2000, Bigelow licensed relevant NASA technology and began adapting it for commercial use. The company became the exclusive commercializer of several related technologies under NASA Space Act agreements. During the 2000s, Bigelow Aerospace redesigned the module architecture and developed multilayer structural and protective systems. The company emphasized the potential benefits of expandable habitats: a compact launch configuration could be expanded in orbit into a larger pressurized volume, while flexible protective layers could offer useful resistance to micrometeoroids and orbital debris. In March 2020, the company dismissed all 88 employees amid the COVID-19 pandemic and ceased active operations. Although BEAM continued to operate as a NASA-owned ISS module, the corporate program remained dormant and is generally considered defunct.
