Overview
Bharti Enterprises is an Indian multinational conglomerate headquartered in New Delhi and founded in 1976 by Sunil Bharti Mittal and his siblings. The group began in manufacturing, initially producing bicycles, before moving into telecommunications and developing a portfolio of businesses across consumer, infrastructure and services sectors. Its most important operating company is Bharti Airtel, one of the world's largest telecommunications operators by subscriber base. Airtel provides mobile voice and data services, fixed-line connectivity, broadband, direct-to-home television, digital payments and enterprise communications in India and a number of markets in Africa and elsewhere. Telecommunications has historically supplied the largest share of Bharti's business activity and has shaped the group's international profile. Bharti's wider portfolio has included telecom infrastructure, insurance, retail, real estate, hospitality, food and agricultural products. Indus Towers, formed through the combination of Bharti Infratel and the earlier Indus Towers platform, operates shared passive telecommunications infrastructure for mobile network operators. Beetel Teletech manufactures and distributes telecommunications equipment, accessories and information-technology products. Bharti Realty develops and manages commercial and other property assets for group companies and external projects. The group has also pursued hospitality and restaurant investments through businesses such as Norlake Hospitality and Gourmet Investments, whose portfolio has included PizzaExpress, Ministry of Crab, Chili's and P. F. Chang's outlets in India. The group has used joint ventures and strategic investments as a recurring expansion method. Examples include the former Bharti AXA insurance businesses, the earlier partnership with Walmart in Indian wholesale retail, the Del Monte food business, and an investment in OneWeb, the satellite broadband company. Bharti also acquired a significant interest in Mauritius-based operator Emtel and announced and completed a substantial investment in BT Group in 2024. Several earlier ventures have subsequently been sold, merged or discontinued, illustrating a portfolio-management approach rather than a commitment to every sector indefinitely. Bharti Enterprises is privately held at the group level, although several associated companies, including Bharti Airtel and Indus Towers, are publicly listed or separately incorporated businesses. The group is also associated with the Bharti Foundation, its philanthropic arm. The foundation's Satya Bharti School Program provides free education and related support to children in rural India, while other initiatives focus on educational quality, sanitation and access for disadvantaged communities. In 2017, the Bharti family announced a pledge of part of its wealth toward philanthropy and the proposed Satya Bharti University. Bharti Enterprises therefore combines a telecom-centered commercial platform with a diversified investment portfolio and a substantial education-focused social mission.
History
Bharti Enterprises was established in 1976 by Sunil Bharti Mittal and his siblings. Its earliest activity was manufacturing, including bicycles, before the group broadened its interests. The move into telecommunications began in 1995, a decisive turning point that ultimately made connectivity the central pillar of the business group. Through Bharti Airtel, Bharti developed a large Indian mobile operation and later expanded into integrated telecommunications, including fixed-line services, home broadband, enterprise connectivity, direct-to-home television and digital financial services. Airtel also built a substantial presence in Africa and other international markets. As the telecommunications business grew, Bharti developed or invested in infrastructure companies that could serve multiple network operators. Bharti Infratel was created in 2007 after the separation of mobile-tower assets from Airtel and became an important participant in India's tower-sharing market. Indus Towers had been incorporated in 2007 by Bharti Infratel, Vodafone Essar and Idea Cellular to provide shared infrastructure on a non-discriminatory basis. The merger of Bharti Infratel and Indus Towers in November 2020 created a much larger tower platform with nationwide coverage. Vodafone later sold its interest to Bharti Airtel in 2024. The group expanded beyond connectivity through a series of partnerships and investments. Bharti AXA Life Insurance was established in 2006, while Bharti AXA General Insurance followed in 2007. The general-insurance business was later sold to ICICI Lombard through an all-share transaction. Bharti also entered Indian retail through Bharti Retail and Easyday, while its wholesale-retail partnership with Walmart operated Best Price Modern Wholesale stores. The Bharti-Walmart relationship ended in 2013, and Future Group acquired Bharti Retail in 2015. Food and agriculture became another area of experimentation. Bharti and E. L. Rothschild established FieldFresh Foods in 2004 to produce and export fresh fruits and vegetables. Del Monte Pacific subsequently acquired an interest, and the business later operated under the Del Monte Foods name in India and South Asia. In 2025, Del Monte Foods was combined with Agro Tech Foods through a share-swap transaction. Hospitality and restaurant activities developed through Gourmet Investments and Norlake Hospitality. Gourmet Investments formed a joint venture with PizzaExpress, later worked with Ministry of Crab, acquired Indian Chili's outlets and entered into an arrangement connected with P. F. Chang's. Bharti has also pursued international connectivity opportunities outside conventional mobile networks. It acquired a 25% interest in Mauritius-based Emtel in 2015. In 2020, Bharti acquired a 50% interest in OneWeb alongside the United Kingdom government, supporting the satellite-broadband company's restructuring and development. Bharti announced a 24.5% investment in BT Group in 2024, completing the acquisition later that year. These transactions demonstrate the group's preference for strategic stakes and partnerships in infrastructure-intensive communications businesses. Not every venture remains part of the portfolio. Hike Messenger, launched in 2012, was discontinued in 2021 as its business shifted toward gaming. Centum Learning, a former wholly owned education and training subsidiary, was acquired by upGrad in 2022. The retail, insurance, food and infrastructure transactions likewise show Bharti's willingness to exit or consolidate activities when ownership structures or strategic priorities change. Alongside its commercial businesses, Bharti established the Bharti Foundation. Its Satya Bharti School Program provides free schooling, learning materials, uniforms and meals to children in rural communities. Additional programs support school quality, learning centers and sanitation. The foundation's work, together with the family's 2017 philanthropy commitment and plans associated with Satya Bharti University, forms a major part of the group's public identity. Today, Bharti Enterprises remains a diversified, privately held Indian group whose commercial influence is most closely associated with Bharti Airtel and telecommunications infrastructure, while its portfolio extends across property, hospitality, food and social development.
