Overview
Berjaya Corporation Berhad is a Malaysian diversified investment and operating group associated with entrepreneur Vincent Tan. Its businesses span consumer-facing and asset-intensive sectors, including property development and investment, hotels and resorts, recreation, retail, food and beverage, gaming and lottery management, motor trading and distribution, telecommunications, information technology, and environmental and clean-technology services. The group has also been associated with financial and investment activities and operates through a collection of subsidiaries, affiliates, brands, and listed companies. The modern Berjaya story began in the mid-1980s, when Tan acquired a substantial interest in Berjaya Industrial Berhad and subsequently obtained control of Sports Toto after purchasing a 51 percent stake from the Malaysian government in 1985. Sports Toto was injected into the group, and the resulting restructuring shifted Berjaya from an industrial-company lineage toward a broad consumer and investment conglomerate. This transaction became a defining turning point because gaming and lottery operations provided a major platform for subsequent diversification. In 1988, Tan exchanged his interests in Berjaya for control of Raleigh Berhad, a listed company that had originated as a bicycle manufacturer. Raleigh was renamed Inter-Pacific and used as the holding-company vehicle for the expanding group; it was later known as Reka Pacific Berhad. The corporate lineage therefore includes several earlier names and businesses, including Berjaya Kawat Berhad, a company established by Broken Hill Proprietary of Australia and National Iron & Steel Mills of Singapore. These changes illustrate that Berjaya Corporation is the outcome of successive acquisitions, share exchanges, restructurings, and business repositioning rather than a single newly incorporated operating company. Berjaya's portfolio has included large-scale property and mixed-use developments, hospitality assets, resort operations, retail chains, restaurant and beverage concepts, and recreation businesses. Berjaya Times Square is among its best-known property-associated offerings. The group has also been linked with Berjaya Hotels & Resorts and with consumer brands and operating companies such as 7-Eleven Malaysia and Berjaya Food. Other important corporate interests have included Berjaya Land, Sports Toto, Berjaya Food, REDtone Digital, Berjaya Philippines, and Bermaz Auto, although the composition of the wider portfolio can change through disposals, acquisitions, restructurings, and changes in investment status. A major group restructuring completed in 2005 enabled Berjaya Corporation Berhad to assume the listing status of Berjaya Group Berhad on Bursa Securities. New shares were listed in the following year. The listed-company structure has allowed the wider group to maintain exposure to different sectors through separately identified subsidiaries and affiliates, while the parent company functions as a diversified holding and investment platform. Berjaya has also developed a visible corporate social-responsibility profile. Its philanthropic activities have included education, skills development, community projects, disaster relief, and donations to charitable organizations. The Better Malaysia Foundation, associated with the group and Vincent Tan, launched Project 100 with SOLS 24/7 in 2013 to support a network of community learning centres. The foundation has also supported charities and flood-relief efforts, while the Berjaya Cares Foundation serves as another charitable vehicle focused on individuals and communities. The group remains a diversified Malaysian corporate house rather than a single-product brand. Its public identity is built on portfolio breadth, property and hospitality visibility, consumer businesses, and a history of entrepreneurial acquisitions. Because Berjaya's operating interests and subsidiary relationships have changed over time, indi…
History
Berjaya Corporation's corporate history is rooted in a sequence of industrial, consumer, and investment-company transformations. One predecessor, Berjaya Kawat Berhad, was established by Broken Hill Proprietary of Australia together with National Iron & Steel Mills of Singapore. The group later became associated with Berjaya Industrial Berhad, whose direction changed significantly after Vincent Tan acquired a stake in 1984. The decisive expansion came in 1985, when Tan purchased a 51 percent interest in Sports Toto from the Malaysian government. He subsequently injected Sports Toto into Berjaya in exchange for a controlling position in the wider group. This restructuring created a new platform for growth and diversification, with gaming and lottery management becoming one of the businesses around which the conglomerate developed. In 1988, Tan exchanged his Berjaya interests for control of Raleigh Berhad. Raleigh had been incorporated as a bicycle manufacturer in 1967 and listed in Malaysia in 1969. Under Tan's control, Raleigh was renamed Inter-Pacific and became the holding-company vehicle for the expanding enterprise. It was later known as Reka Pacific Berhad. The use of an existing listed company as a corporate vehicle allowed Berjaya to reorganize its assets and broaden its activities beyond the original industrial and bicycle-related businesses. During the late 1980s and subsequent decades, the group expanded into property, hotels, resorts, recreation, retail, food and beverage, motor distribution, financial and investment activities, telecommunications, information technology, and environmental services. This strategy produced a portfolio of operating companies and investment holdings rather than a single integrated product business. Berjaya's best-known public-facing assets have included Berjaya Times Square, hospitality properties under the Berjaya Hotels & Resorts name, Sports Toto, and consumer businesses connected with convenience retail and food service. The corporate structure was further reorganized in the 2000s. In 2005, Berjaya Corporation Berhad assumed the listing status of Berjaya Group Berhad on the Main Board of Bursa Securities after completion of a group restructuring. New shares were listed the following year. The reorganization consolidated the parent identity while preserving a network of listed subsidiaries and associates. Companies and interests associated with the group have included Berjaya Land, Sports Toto, Berjaya Food, REDtone Digital, Berjaya Philippines, and Bermaz Auto. Philanthropy has been an additional part of Berjaya's institutional profile. The Better Malaysia Foundation, associated with the group and Vincent Tan, has supported education, skills training, community initiatives, charitable organizations, and disaster relief. In 2013, it worked with SOLS 24/7 on Project 100, an initiative intended to establish community centres providing free educational access. Later contributions included support for charities and flood victims. Berjaya Cares Foundation is another charitable arm associated with the group. The group's history is therefore best understood as a progression from industrial and listed-company predecessors to a diversified Malaysian conglomerate shaped by acquisitions, share exchanges, portfolio expansion, and recurring corporate restructuring. Its present identity combines parent-level investment management with businesses in property, hospitality, consumer services, gaming, mobility, communications, technology, and environmental services.

Controversies
- Animal-welfare and food-safety criticism concerning egg sourcingControversy
The UK-based organization Equitas publicly criticized hospitality and food-service operations associated with Berjaya over the continued use of battery-cage eggs. The campaign argued that intensive cage systems raise animal-welfare concerns and may create food-safety risks. The material describes this as criticism and advocacy pressure, not as an established legal finding.
