Bell Aircraft was an American aircraft manufacturer founded in Buffalo, New York, in 1935 by Lawrence Dale Bell. The company emerged during the expansion of the United States aviation industry and became one of the more technically distinctive American aircraft producers before and during the Second World War. Its work ranged from conventional military fighters and trainers to experimental aircraft and early helicopters. Bell's wartime reputation was established primarily by the P-39 Airacobra, a single-engine fighter with an unusual configuration in which the engine was mounted behind the pilot and drove a propeller through a long extension shaft. The arrangement permitted the installation of a cannon firing through the propeller hub. Although the aircraft had limitations at high altitude, large numbers were built for the United States and supplied to Allied forces, particularly the Soviet Union through Lend-Lease. Bell also developed the P-63 Kingcobra, an improved derivative that saw substantial service with the Soviet Union, and the P-59 Airacomet, the first American jet fighter to fly. The P-59 was principally an experimental and developmental platform rather than a major operational fighter, but it gave the company and the United States Army Air Forces experience with jet propulsion and high-speed flight. After the war, Bell pursued advanced research in aviation and aerospace. The Bell X-1 became one of the most important experimental aircraft of the twentieth century. In 1947, the aircraft exceeded the speed of sound in level flight during a United States Air Force and National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics test program, with Charles E. Yeager as pilot. The X-1 program made Bell a prominent name in American high-speed research. The later Bell X-2 investigated flight at extreme speed and altitude and contributed to understanding the aerodynamic and thermal problems associated with near-space flight. Bell also developed a durable commercial and utility aviation business. The Bell 47, introduced in the postwar period, became one of the best-known early production helicopters. Its bubble canopy and light utility configuration helped establish helicopters in civilian roles such as agricultural work, medical evacuation, observation, training, and general transport. The model also gained broad public visibility through its use in the television series MASH, although that popular association came after Bell Aircraft itself had been absorbed into successor corporate structures. The company experimented with additional fixed-wing aircraft, helicopters, and vertical-flight concepts, but its independent identity did not survive the consolidation of the American aerospace industry. Textron acquired Bell Aircraft in 1960. The helicopter business was subsequently known as Bell Helicopter and later Bell Helicopter Textron, while the Bell name continued under Textron in rotorcraft and advanced vertical-lift programs. Bell Aircraft is therefore best understood as the historical predecessor of the modern Bell aviation business rather than as a currently operating standalone brand.
History
Lawrence Dale Bell established Bell Aircraft in Buffalo, New York, in 1935 after gaining experience in the American aircraft industry. The company entered a market that was becoming increasingly important to the United States military and pursued a mixture of production aircraft and technically ambitious research projects. Its engineers were willing to depart from conventional layouts, a characteristic visible in both the P-39 Airacobra and the company's later experimental aircraft. The P-39 Airacobra was Bell's first major success. Its engine was positioned behind the cockpit, with a driveshaft running forward to the propeller. The company's most celebrated achievement came from experimental research. The Bell X-1 was a rocket-powered aircraft designed to investigate transonic and supersonic flight. On October 14, 1947, it became the first crewed aircraft to achieve level flight faster than the speed of sound, with Charles E. Yeager at the controls. The aircraft was named Glamorous Glennis after Yeager's wife and was operated within a research program involving the United States Air Force and NACA. The X-1 program made Bell a major participant in the development of American high-speed flight science and demonstrated the value of specialized research aircraft. Bell continued this role with the X-2, a more advanced rocket aircraft intended to explore higher speeds and altitudes.
