Overview
Belkin is an American consumer-electronics accessories company headquartered in El Segundo, California. Founded by Chet Pipkin in the early 1980s, the business began by making cables and connectors for the rapidly expanding personal-computer market. Its first commercial opportunity came from the need to connect home computers to newly emerging printers. Pipkin started the company from his parents' home in Hawthorne, California, selling computer-to-printer cables to local computer shops. He left university studies in 1982 to concentrate on the business, and on January 1, 1983, moved into a professional workplace and hired the company's first full-time employees. Belkin initially differentiated itself through comparatively rapid production and delivery. It manufactured cables in the United States during its early years, allowing it to respond quickly to regional customers, and began contracting Asian factories in 1985 as demand and international distribution expanded. The company broadened beyond basic computer cables during the 1990s, adding surge protectors and USB-related products. In the 2000s it increasingly oriented its portfolio toward mobile devices, laptops, tablets, and digital entertainment, developing chargers, connector cables, audio products, power accessories, and protective cases. The brand's business scope now covers charging and power, wired and wireless connectivity, device protection, audio, computer peripherals, home networking-related products, and enterprise or government data-security hardware. Its portfolio has included charging cables, data and audio/video adapters, wall and vehicle chargers, power banks, charging stations, wireless charging products, surge protectors, power strips, docking stations, data hubs, headphones, earbuds, screen protectors, phone cases, network cables, and secure KVM switches. Product families and brands associated with Belkin include BoostCharge for charging, ScreenForce for display protection, SoundForm for audio, and Future Ventures for products connected with content creation, spatial computing, artificial intelligence, and robotics. Belkin also expanded through adjacent technology businesses. It launched the WeMo smart-home brand in 2012 and acquired Cisco Systems' Home Networking Business Unit, including Linksys, in 2013. Linksys later became a separate Foxconn-related business rather than remaining part of Belkin's operating brand portfolio. In 2016, Belkin and Uponor created Phyn, a home water-management technology venture; Belkin acquired Uponor's interest in 2021. In 2018, Foxconn Interconnect Technology acquired Belkin for a reported $886 million, after which Belkin continued to operate as an independent subsidiary. The acquisition gave Belkin access to the broader Foxconn manufacturing and technology ecosystem while preserving its consumer-facing brand identity. Leadership transitioned in 2021 when Pipkin moved from chief executive to executive chairman and Steve Malony, previously a senior vice president and general manager, became CEO. Belkin has continued to emphasize compatibility with major consumer platforms and charging standards, including USB-C, Apple's MagSafe ecosystem, and Qi2. It introduced a Qi2-enabled three-in-one wireless charging pad and a convertible wireless charging product in 2023, and in 2024 launched Future Ventures products including an auto-tracking stand for Apple Vision Pro and a battery holder for the same spatial-computing platform. The company positions itself as a design-led, relatively premium accessories specialist rather than as a manufacturer of primary computing or mobile devices. Its products are sold through consumer-electronics retailers, online channels, mobile and computer ecosystems, and commercial or institutional customers. Belkin has also maintained environmental and community initiatives, including energy-efficiency improvements, solar installations, electric-vehicle charging stations, local education programs, c…
History
Belkin developed out of the early personal-computer accessory market in Southern California. While studying at UCLA, Chet Pipkin spent time in computer shops and identified a practical problem: new home computers and printers needed dependable cables and connectors to work together. He began producing computer-to-printer cables from his parents' home in Hawthorne, California, and sold them through local computer retailers. Family members and friends assisted with assembly, including Pipkin's machinist father and brother. In 1982, Pipkin left his university studies to devote himself to the growing company. On January 1, 1983, Belkin moved into a professional facility and hired its first full-time employees. The company initially manufactured cables in the United States, using local production to provide short turnaround times for customers. In 1984, its Hamlet cable connected the serial port of an Apple IIc computer with Centronics-interface printers, illustrating the company's early focus on solving compatibility problems between consumer-computing products. As sales expanded beyond Southern California, Belkin began using Asian contract manufacturers in 1985 to increase volume and support international distribution. During the 1990s, Belkin broadened its product range from basic cables and connectors to surge protectors and USB-related products. This was an important shift from a single-use computer cable supplier toward a broader peripherals company. The spread of laptops, mobile phones, tablets, and digital media in the 2000s created another major expansion opportunity. Belkin added chargers, connector cables, device-protection products, audio accessories, and other products designed around increasingly mobile personal technology. The company began producing stereo cables and speaker wiring in 2002 and, by the late 2000s, was placing greater emphasis on smartphone accessories. Belkin moved into connected-home technology with the launch of WeMo in 2012. The following year it acquired Cisco Systems' Home Networking Business Unit, including Linksys. The transaction added wireless networking expertise and a recognizable networking brand. Linksys subsequently became a separate Foxconn-related subsidiary, associated with Foxconn Interconnect Technology and Fortinet, rather than remaining a wholly integrated Belkin business. In 2016, Belkin and Uponor formed Phyn, a home water-management technology venture. Uponor sold its stake to Belkin in 2021. Foxconn Interconnect Technology acquired Belkin in September 2018 for a reported $886 million. Belkin remained operationally independent and retained its consumer-facing identity, while joining a large electronics-manufacturing group. The company has maintained its headquarters in El Segundo, following earlier offices in Playa Vista, Hawthorne, and Compton, and operates offices across North America, Europe, Asia, the Middle East, and Oceania. Leadership changed in January 2021. Founder Chet Pipkin left the CEO position and became executive chairman of the board. Steve Malony, who had served as a senior vice president and general manager, was announced as CEO. Product development in the 2020s has focused on charging standards and new device ecosystems. Belkin developed an early third-party MagSafe accessory, released Qi2 products in 2023, expanded its SoundForm audio range, and launched Future Ventures in 2024 for products related to content creation, spatial computing, artificial intelligence, and robotics. Alongside commercial growth, Belkin has reported environmental and community initiatives. In 2009 it committed to reducing worldwide electricity consumption, later reporting a 37 percent reduction by 2018 through measures such as solar panels, electric-vehicle charging stations, and motion-sensitive lighting. It announced an objective of carbon neutrality across its business by 2030. Its outreach has included charitable cases supporting breast-cancer fundraising, a donation to the One Laptop per Child initiative, local programs in Compton, educational partnerships with Da Vinci Schools, and a student internship program.
