BDO Global
BDO Global is an international network of independent accounting, tax, advisory and consulting firms.
Last updated August 31, 2026
Overview
BDO Global is a worldwide professional-services network serving businesses, public-sector organisations and other institutions through legally independent member firms. Its principal activities include audit and assurance, accounting, taxation, consulting, transactions and business advisory work, with additional practices in areas such as risk, technology, restructuring, ESG and managed services. Although the BDO name is presented as a coordinated international brand, the network does not operate as one conventional multinational accounting corporation: each national member firm is a separate legal entity governed by the laws and professional rules of its own jurisdiction. The organisation began in 1963 as the Binder Seidman International Group, created by accounting firms from Canada, Germany, the Netherlands, the United Kingdom and the United States. In 1973 it adopted the BDO name, derived from the surnames of three founding firms: Binder in the United Kingdom, Dijker in the Netherlands and Otte in Germany. The brand subsequently became a common identity for national practices that retained local ownership and legal independence while sharing standards, methodologies, technical resources and international referral capabilities. BDO's central coordination structure is based in Belgium. BDO Global Coordination B.V. coordinates the network, while BDO International Limited is a United Kingdom company limited by guarantee associated with the member-firm structure. This arrangement distinguishes BDO from a centrally owned professional-services group and allows country practices to combine local regulatory knowledge with access to cross-border specialists. The network is generally positioned between the largest global accounting networks and smaller specialist firms, competing particularly for middle-market, privately owned, entrepreneurial and internationally active clients, while also serving listed companies and public bodies. Its service portfolio spans traditional accountancy and assurance as well as tax, legal support in some jurisdictions, deals and transaction advice, corporate finance, restructuring, forensic work, risk management, technology consulting, cyber security, data and analytics, digital transformation, outsourcing and sustainability-related services. Offerings differ by country because member firms determine their own legal, regulatory and commercial scope. Examples include BDO Australia's financial and business advisory practices, BDO India's assurance, tax, advisory, managed-services and technology activities, BDO UK's audit, deals, consulting, risk, ESG and digital operations, and BDO Italy's audit, ESG, mergers-and-acquisitions, tax and law services. The network has expanded through mergers, affiliations and rebranding of established national firms. Significant examples include the integration of Dunwoody and BDO Ward Mallette in Canada, the absorption of Horwath and PKF-related practices in Australia, the development of BDO's Chinese member firms, and the 2019 combination of BDO and Moore Stephens businesses in the United Kingdom. A worldwide branding programme around 2009-2010 replaced many country-specific names with BDO, seeking a more consistent visual and market identity across the network. BDO is widely described as the world's fifth-largest accounting network by aggregated member-firm income. The network reported combined member-firm income of approximately US$15 billion for 2024, according to the cited reference material. That figure represents the total of independent member firms rather than revenue of a single consolidated corporation. BDO remains active internationally, with national practices adapting the shared brand to local regulation, client sectors and market conditions.
History
BDO Global traces its origins to 1963, when accounting firms from Canada, Germany, the Netherlands, the United Kingdom and the United States formed the Binder Seidman International Group. The network's creation reflected the growing need for accounting firms to support clients operating across borders without necessarily creating a single centrally owned partnership. In 1973, the organisation adopted the BDO name, constructed from Binder, Dijker and Otte, the surnames associated with three of its founding firms. The BDO model developed around independent national practices. Member firms use a shared identity and cooperate on international assignments, technical knowledge, quality frameworks and referrals, but remain separate legal entities. This structure lets them comply with domestic professional regulation and ownership rules while presenting a recognisable global network to clients. The coordination function is based in Belgium, and the network's legal arrangements include BDO Global Coordination B.V. and BDO International Limited. Growth has occurred through the addition and combination of national firms. BDO Australia, established in 1975, later consolidated several practices, including combinations involving Horwath and PKF-related businesses. In Canada, the network presence developed from firms connected with Dunwoody and BDO Ward Mallette, followed by further consolidation. China's network includes the historic Shu Lun Pan practice, founded in Shanghai in 1927, together with tax-services operations associated with the Lixin brand. Mauritius joined through the DCDM practice, which entered the network in 2007 and adopted the BDO Mauritius name in 2010. A major brand-management step occurred around 2009-2010, when many member firms abandoned longer local names and adopted BDO branding. In Canada, Dunwoody was removed from the name; in Ireland, BDO Simpson Xavier adopted the worldwide identity; and in the United Kingdom, BDO Stoy Hayward became BDO. The rebrand aimed to create greater consistency in design, messaging, websites and marketing materials across a network then spanning roughly 110 countries. The United Kingdom practice has a particularly layered history. It originated as Stoy and Co in 1903, became Stoy Hayward and Co after Jack Hayward joined in 1919, and later grew through combinations including Finnie and Co and the BDO Binder Hamlyn offices that remained independent after other offices joined larger networks. It became a limited liability partnership in 2004. In 2019, the UK BDO and Moore Stephens businesses completed a combination. The practice later developed BDO Digital, initially focused on cyber security, technology risk and assurance, and expanded toward data, analytics, artificial intelligence, cloud, digital transformation and enterprise applications. BDO member firms have also expanded their sector and service capabilities. BDO India has built practices in assurance, tax, advisory, managed services, outsourcing, technology products and digital transformation. BDO Italy has developed audit, ESG, M&A, tax and legal services. BDO's global and national practices serve private companies, listed enterprises, governments and public institutions, with individual country firms differing in scale and specialisation. The network is commonly ranked fifth among global accounting networks by combined member-firm income. The cited material reports aggregate income of about US$15 billion in 2024. Because BDO is a network of independent firms, this figure is not equivalent to consolidated corporate revenue. Its continuing strategy is to maintain global reach and a unified brand while allowing local firms to preserve legal autonomy and adapt to national regulation.

Former BDO Puerto Rico president Fernando Scherrer was indicted in a federal case involving alleged diversion of federal education funds. The allegations were directed at the named individuals and did not establish liability for BDO Global as a network.

BDO Stoy Hayward partner Andrew Caldwell was appointed independent valuer for nationalised mortgage bank Northern Rock. Shareholder groups challenged the statutory valuation framework, arguing that it could reduce compensation; the controversy concerned the valuation process and does not by itself establish wrongdoing by BDO.
