Overview
Basse und Selve, also written Basse & Selve and commonly abbreviated BuS, was a German engine manufacturer based in Altena. The company was established in 1908 by Gustav Selve and became part of the wider Selve industrial and automotive enterprise. Its principal business was the design and manufacture of internal-combustion engines supplied to vehicle makers and other industrial customers rather than the production of a single consumer-facing engine brand. The company’s engines were used in automobiles, motorcycles, boats, aircraft and railcars, and it supplied power units to manufacturers including Selve Automobilwerke as well as Beckmann, Mannesmann and Heim. This made Basse und Selve an important component supplier within the early German motor industry, even though its name is less familiar than those of the vehicle manufacturers that used its products. The Altena factory was founded during the formative period of the German automotive industry, when manufacturers frequently relied on specialist engine builders or sold engines to multiple vehicle companies. Basse und Selve operated in that environment by producing engines for both road and non-road applications. Its relationship with Selve Automobilwerke AG was particularly close: the sister company built Selve-branded cars, while Basse und Selve provided engines and related manufacturing expertise. The firm’s customer base nevertheless extended beyond the Selve automobile business, covering commercial and other vehicles as well as marine and rail applications. The BuS.IVa was among the company’s more powerful aviation products, with applications involving engines rated at approximately 300 horsepower. In practice, some large aircraft installations were later replaced by Mercedes or Maybach engines, limiting the lasting impact of Basse und Selve’s aero-engine program. Basse und Selve continued manufacturing engines after the First World War but ultimately did not survive the contraction and restructuring of the interwar German automotive industry. The company closed in 1932. Its sister automobile business, Selve Automobilwerke AG, remained active for approximately two more years before closing in 1934. Basse und Selve is therefore best understood as a defunct German industrial engine maker whose historical importance lies in its broad range of early motor applications and its connection to the Selve automobile enterprise.
History
Basse und Selve was founded in Altena in 1908 by Gustav Selve. The factory employed approximately 2,000 workers and formed part of the Selve industrial network, whose activities also included the Selve automobile business. Basse und Selve specialized in engines and supplied power units not only for Selve cars but also for vehicles produced by other manufacturers, including Beckmann, Mannesmann and Heim. Its range covered automobiles, motorcycles, boats, aircraft and railcars, reflecting the broad market for internal-combustion engines in the early twentieth century. After Gustav Selve died, his son Dr. Walther von Selve took over the firm. Under the Selve organization, Basse und Selve also pursued aero-engine production. Known aircraft-engine models included the BuS.III, BuS.IV and BuS.IVa. These products were used in a limited number of German aircraft and large aircraft projects during the First World War period. Applications included the AGO S.I, Rumpler C.I, Rumpler C.IV, Siemens-Schuckert R.VIII and Zeppelin-Staaken R.VI. The Hansa-Brandenburg W.34, a large fighter prototype completed before the end of hostilities in 1918, was identified as the largest and most powerful fighter associated with a Basse und Selve engine. The company’s aero-engines did not secure a major position in the German aviation industry. Several large aircraft used Basse und Selve engines, but Mercedes and Maybach alternatives were often substituted when available. The Zeppelin-Staaken R.VI, for example, was associated with four BuS.IVa engines in one installation, but these were later replaced by Maybach engines. This pattern indicates that Basse und Selve was a capable supplier with limited market penetration rather than a leading aviation-engine producer. Basse und Selve continued engine production during the interwar period. Economic pressures and the difficult conditions facing German vehicle manufacturers eventually led to its closure in 1932. The related Selve Automobilwerke AG continued for roughly two additional years and closed in 1934. The surviving historical record consequently presents Basse und Selve as a significant early German engine manufacturer, especially for its breadth of applications and its role in the Selve automotive group, but not as a continuing company or active modern brand.
