Overview
Banque SYZ is a Swiss boutique private bank headquartered in Geneva and the private-banking arm of the SYZ Group. The institution was established as Bank Syz SA in January 1996 by Eric Syz, Alfredo Piacentini and Paolo Luban. Its original proposition combined Swiss private banking with investment-management capabilities, and the group subsequently developed a broader wealth-management platform serving private clients, institutions and international investors. The business expanded rapidly during its first decade. In July 1996, the group created the Luxembourg-based OYSTER mutual-fund platform, which became an important vehicle for its investment-management activities. From 1999 onward, the group established or developed operations outside Geneva, including Syz Bank & Trust in Nassau and offices in Lugano and Locarno. It opened a Luxembourg office in 2001, followed shortly afterward by a London location, and added a Zurich branch in 2003. These moves gave the group a wider distribution and client-service network while retaining Switzerland as its principal base. The group also pursued partnerships and acquisitions in continental Europe. In 2002 it partnered with the Italian Albertini group to create Albertini Syz in Milan; the entity became a bank in 2003 under the name Banca Albertini Syz, and SYZ later took control in 2013. A Hong Kong office was opened in 2007, while a 2009 partnership with Spanish group N+1 produced the Madrid-based management company N+1 Syz. In 2010, institutional-management activities were consolidated under Syz Asset Management. The group subsequently opened a Paris office focused on marketing OYSTER funds to French institutional clients and created Syz Swiss Advisors in 2012 for U.S. investors. A major ownership and strategic transition occurred in 2014. Alfredo Piacentini and Paolo Luban left the group in June of that year, after which Eric Syz took control of almost all shares of the holding company and became its majority shareholder and CEO. Around the same period, the bank announced the possible outsourcing of certain back-office and information-technology functions, a measure that could have affected between 30 and 45 positions from a workforce of approximately 450 employees. The group also obtained authorization for a representative office in Dubai and continued to broaden its international footprint. Banque SYZ and its affiliated businesses operate through three principal lines: private banking through Bank Syz, asset management through Syz Asset Management, and liquid and illiquid alternative investments through Syz Capital. The group has maintained offices or representative operations in Swiss locations including Geneva, Zurich, Lugano and Locarno, as well as in international centers such as Istanbul and Johannesburg. It opened a Johannesburg representative office in 2015 and an Istanbul representative office in 2020. In 2021, SYZ acquired Zurich-based independent asset-management company BHA Partners AG, strengthening its Swiss wealth-management presence. The bank has received industry recognition for financial soundness, private-banking services and investment-management capabilities. It was identified as the best-performing Swiss bank for soundness in The Banker's 2014 global-bank ranking and received Best Private Banking Boutique recognition in the Global Private Banking Awards in 2014 and 2016. It was also named Best Private Bank - Investment Management Platform at the 2017 WealthBriefing Swiss Awards. In December 2021, the SYZ Group reported assets under management of US$29.5 billion. The group's later positioning placed greater emphasis on private banking and private markets alongside its established asset-management activities.
History
Banque SYZ was founded in Geneva in January 1996 as Bank Syz SA by Eric Syz, Alfredo Piacentini and Paolo Luban. The group established the Luxembourg mutual-fund platform OYSTER in July of the same year, creating an early foundation for its asset-management business alongside private banking. Internationalization began in 1999 with the establishment of Syz Bank & Trust in Nassau and the opening of Swiss offices in Lugano and Locarno. In 2001, the group added a Luxembourg office and then a London office. It partnered with the Italian Albertini group in 2002 to form Albertini Syz in Milan. That business became Banca Albertini Syz in 2003, the same year that SYZ opened its Zurich branch. SYZ eventually took control of Banca Albertini Syz in 2013. The group continued its geographic expansion with a Hong Kong office in 2007 and a 2009 partnership with Spain's N+1 to establish N+1 Syz in Madrid. In 2010, institutional-management activities were brought together under Syz Asset Management. A Paris office followed in 2011 to market OYSTER funds to French institutional investors, while Syz Swiss Advisors was established in 2012 as a Swiss management company registered with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission and focused on U.S. investors. The ownership structure changed in 2014 when Alfredo Piacentini and Paolo Luban departed. Eric Syz subsequently became majority shareholder and CEO and took control of almost all shares in the group's holding company. The same year, the bank announced a plan to outsource selected back-office and IT functions, potentially affecting 30 to 45 positions. It also opened a representative office in Dubai after receiving authorization from the Dubai Financial Services Authority. During the following years, the group continued developing its private-banking and investment-management network. It opened a representative office in Johannesburg in 2015 and established a Madrid branch for Syz Asset Management in 2017. Bank Syz acquired the Swiss branch of Royal Bank of Canada in 2015, further expanding its Swiss business. The institution received repeated industry recognition, including Best Private Banking Boutique awards in 2014 and 2016 and a 2017 WealthBriefing award for its investment-management platform. Bank Syz opened a representative office in Istanbul in 2020. In December 2021, the SYZ Group acquired BHA Partners AG, a Zurich-based independent asset manager. By that month, the group's assets under management were reported at US$29.5 billion. The group describes its activities through three complementary lines: private banking through Bank Syz, asset management through Syz Asset Management, and liquid and illiquid alternative investments through Syz Capital. The business has increasingly emphasized private banking and private markets in addition to its historical asset-management operations.
