Baltic Shipyard, also known as Baltiysky Zavod, is a major Russian shipbuilding enterprise located on the southern part of Vasilievsky Island in Saint Petersburg. Founded in 1856 by the Saint Petersburg merchant M. Carr and the Scotsman Murdoch L. MacPherson, it is one of Russia's oldest continuously significant shipbuilding sites. History
Baltic Shipyard was established in 1856 in Saint Petersburg by the merchant M. Carr and the Scotsman Murdoch L. MacPherson. Originally known as the Carr and MacPherson yard, it became part of the industrial development of the Russian capital's port and shipbuilding sector. In 1864 the yard constructed two Uragan-class monitors, establishing an early connection with naval shipbuilding. The enterprise was sold to Prince Ochtomski in 1874. The yard continued to develop as a builder of military and commercial vessels. During the late imperial period and the Soviet era, its output included major naval ships and other specialized craft. In 1934 it began work on three prototypes for the Soviet S-class submarine, a design derived from German work produced through the Dutch company Ingenieurskantoor voor Scheepsbouw. On 30 December 1936, the enterprise was redesignated Shipyard 189 and named after Sergo Ordzhonikidze.
