BAE Systems Australia is the Australian subsidiary of the British multinational defence company BAE Systems. It provides defence, aerospace, naval, weapons, electronic systems, training, sustainment, communications and integrated support capabilities to the Australian Defence Force and associated government customers. The business operates within a long-established Australian defence-industrial lineage that reaches back to weapons testing at the Woomera Test Range during the early 1950s. History
BAE Systems Australia's history is rooted in the development of Australia's postwar defence and aerospace industry. During the early 1950s, Bristol Aeroplane Company and English Electric conducted testing of first-generation air-defence missile systems at the Woomera Test Range. The two companies later became part of the British Aircraft Corporation, whose Australian activities continued to support the country's missile, aerospace and defence programmes. In 1977, the British Aircraft Corporation was nationalised in the United Kingdom. Its Australian operations were subsequently known as British Aerospace Australia. The business expanded in April 1996 when it acquired AWA Defence Industries, doubling its Australian scale and broadening its defence-electronics capabilities. AWA Defence Industries had been established in October 1988 through the combination of defence-electronics operations associated with AWA, Thorn EMI Electronics Australia and Fairey Australasia.
