Overview
Axway Software is a publicly traded enterprise software company with French origins and a substantial United States presence. The company develops technologies that help large organizations connect applications, business partners, employees, devices, and digital channels. Its portfolio has historically covered enterprise application integration, business-to-business integration, managed file transfer, API management, business activity monitoring, analytics, mobile application development, and file synchronization. Axway was incorporated in December 2000 when Sopra separated its software infrastructure activities into a dedicated subsidiary. The new company became a vehicle for building a specialized enterprise-integration business through a combination of organic development and acquisitions. Early transactions expanded its capabilities in integration middleware and B2B connectivity, while later acquisitions added managed file transfer, API management, business monitoring, mobile development, and cloud file-sharing technologies. The company's acquisition of Cyclone Commerce in 2006 and Tumbleweed Communications in 2008 strengthened its position in secure business-to-business exchange and managed file transfer. The purchase of Vordel in 2012 added API management expertise, a capability that later became central to Axway's platform strategy. Systar, acquired in 2014, contributed business activity monitoring and operational analytics. Appcelerator, acquired in 2016, extended the portfolio into cross-platform mobile application development, and Syncplicity, acquired in 2017, added enterprise file synchronization and sharing. Axway separated from Sopra Group and began trading on Euronext Paris in June 2011. Although independently listed, it has retained a close shareholder and strategic relationship with Sopra Steria and the wider Sopra GMT holding structure. Axway has been included in the CAC Small index and has served customers across many industries and geographic markets. The company presents its portfolio through the Axway AMPLIFY platform, which brings together API management, integration, managed file transfer, B2B connectivity, and related capabilities. Its products are aimed primarily at large enterprises and regulated organizations that need to govern data flows across legacy systems, cloud services, APIs, partners, and digital applications. Typical use cases include exposing and securing APIs, automating partner transactions, moving sensitive files, modernizing application estates, monitoring business processes, and supporting mobile or distributed workforces. In September 2024, Axway acquired Sopra Banking Software in a transaction reported at €330 million. Sopra Banking Software became a separate business unit within the Axway Group, and the combined organization was led by Axway chief executive Patrick Donovan. In October 2024, the banking-software business adopted the SBS name. The transaction significantly broadened Axway's scope beyond integration infrastructure into specialized software for banking institutions. Axway's identity is therefore built around enterprise connectivity rather than consumer software. Its competitive proposition combines long-standing integration and secure-transfer technology with newer API-led and cloud-oriented tools. The business operates internationally, with development, support, and regional operations in Europe, North America, South America, and Asia.
History
Axway's roots lie in Sopra's software infrastructure activities. The company was incorporated on 28 December 2000 as Sopra created a dedicated subsidiary for enterprise integration software. Sopra used the new entity to pursue the enterprise application integration market, where organizations were seeking ways to connect disparate internal applications and external business systems. The company expanded early through acquisitions. Viewlocity, a Swedish integration-software company, was acquired in early 2002. Christophe Fabre became chief executive in 2005. Axway then acquired the United States company Cyclone Commerce in January 2006, strengthening its B2B integration and secure transaction capabilities. Following that transaction, much of the executive management moved to the Phoenix, Arizona area, contributing to Axway's French-American operating profile. In February 2007, Axway purchased Atos's B2B software business in Germany. In June 2008, it acquired Tumbleweed Communications, a United States provider associated with secure managed file transfer and data-exchange products. These transactions broadened Axway from an integration-middleware specialist into a wider provider of software for controlled business data movement. Axway became independent from Sopra Group in June 2011 through a spin-off and listing on Euronext Paris. Its public-company structure did not end its relationship with Sopra. Sopra and related holding entities remained important shareholders, and Sopra later combined with Steria in 2014 to form Sopra Steria. The next stage of Axway's development centered on APIs and adjacent digital-integration technologies. In November 2012, the company acquired Irish API-management vendor Vordel. It purchased Brazilian company SCI Soluções in September 2013, establishing a stronger South American presence, and acquired the assets of Australia's Information Gateway in January 2014. In June 2014, Axway acquired French business-activity-monitoring specialist Systar, adding monitoring and analytics capabilities. In January 2016, Axway acquired Appcelerator, whose Titanium framework supported cross-platform native mobile development. In February 2017, it acquired Syncplicity, a provider of enterprise file synchronization and sharing. These additions were brought into a broader platform strategy in which the AMPLIFY brand connected previously separate product families through a more unified experience. Axway continued selling to large organizations across sectors and regions. In 2017, SEA, the operator of Milan's Malpensa and Linate airports, selected Axway API Management as part of an AMPLIFY implementation. The company has described a global customer base and operations spanning France, the United States, Europe, South America, and Asia. A major change came in September 2024, when Axway acquired Sopra Banking Software for a reported €330 million. The acquired business joined Axway as a separate unit, with Axway chief executive Patrick Donovan leading the combined organization. In October 2024, Sopra Banking Software was rebranded SBS. This transaction expanded Axway's business into banking applications while preserving its established focus on enterprise software and organizational connectivity.
