Overview
Attica Group is a Greek ferry transportation group headquartered in Piraeus. Its business is centered on scheduled passenger, vehicle and freight ferry services linking mainland Greece with the Greek islands, Italy and other European destinations. The group operates through several established ferry brands, most notably Superfast Ferries, Blue Star Ferries, Hellenic Seaways and ANEK Lines. The company was founded in Greece in 1918 as the General Company of Commerce and Industry of Greece. Its early business was not maritime transport: it produced and traded flour through Attica Flour Mills. The enterprise changed ownership and name in 1922, becoming Attica Enterprises S.A., later Attica Enterprises Holding S.A., and eventually Attica Group. It became a publicly traded company on the Athens Stock Exchange in 1924. For much of the twentieth century, its activities were primarily commercial and industrial rather than ferry operations. Attica's strategic transformation into a shipping group began in the early 1990s under a new management team chaired by Pericles S. Panagopulos. In 1993, the company established Attica Maritime, later associated with Superfast Ferries, and ordered two purpose-built car-passenger ships. Superfast I and Superfast II entered service in 1995 on the Patras-Ancona route. Their faster crossings helped establish a modern Greek ferry proposition focused on reduced journey times, contemporary ships and integrated carriage of passengers, cars and freight. Additional Superfast vessels followed, allowing the group to expand across routes connecting Greece with Italy and later into northern European waters. A second major pillar emerged through Blue Star Ferries, whose network serves the Aegean and numerous Greek islands. The group subsequently broadened its domestic reach through acquisitions and investments. In 2006, Blue Star Maritime acquired the assets of DANE Sea Line, including the ferry Diagoras, strengthening service to the Dodecanese. Attica also bought and sold interests in other shipping companies and adjusted its fleet in response to route economics, including the disposal of older, specialized or non-core vessels. Attica expanded its ownership of Hellenic Seaways in stages. It obtained a controlling interest in 2018 and raised its holding to 98.83% in June of that year; the remaining minority interest was acquired in 2019. This added a substantial domestic island-ferry operation to the group's portfolio. In 2016, Attica also formed Africa Morocco Link with BMCE Bank and Moroccan investors, holding a 49% minority stake in the joint venture. That investment was sold to Stena Line in 2024. The group later acquired ANEK Lines, a major Greek ferry operator, in a transaction completed during the 2020s. The acquisition expanded Attica's route network and fleet and made ANEK Lines another principal operating brand within the group. Following the transaction, Attica was described as the second-largest ferry operator in Europe by passenger volume. Across its subsidiaries, the group operates a large fleet serving both international and domestic routes, with activities spanning conventional RoPax ferries, passenger and vehicle transport, and freight logistics. Attica's public profile has also been affected by serious controversies. A 2023 investigative report alleged that asylum seekers arriving at Italian ports were unlawfully returned to Greece on Superfast Ferries services, with claims concerning concealment and detention conditions on board. In September 2023, a passenger died after being pushed from the loading ramp of Blue Horizon, a Blue Star Ferries vessel. Video footage prompted arrests and criminal charges against four crew members. These events generated significant scrutiny of the group's safety, passenger-handling and human-rights responsibilities. Today, Attica Group remains an active Greek maritime transport enterprise. Its competitive position rests on route density, recognizable ferry b…
History
Attica Group was established in Piraeus in 1918 as the General Company of Commerce and Industry of Greece. Its initial activities involved flour production and trading, conducted under the Attica Flour Mills name. In 1922, after a change of ownership, the business became Attica Enterprises S.A. It later adopted the name Attica Enterprises Holding S.A. before being shortened to Attica Group. The company was listed on the Athens Stock Exchange in 1924. For most of its first decades, Attica was principally a commercial and industrial enterprise rather than a ferry operator. Its decisive transformation began in 1993, when a new management team chaired by Pericles S. Panagopulos created Attica Maritime. The subsidiary was later associated with the Superfast Ferries brand. Two new car-passenger vessels, Superfast I and Superfast II, were ordered in Germany and entered service in 1995 between Patras and Ancona. The ships reduced the crossing time substantially and helped introduce a faster, more modern model of ferry travel in the Greece-Italy market. Superfast expanded during the second half of the 1990s. Superfast III and Superfast IV were ordered in Finland and delivered in 1998. The newer ships operated on the Patras-Ancona route, while the first pair also supported connections involving Igoumenitsa, Bari and southern Italy. During the following years, the group developed and traded vessels across several European markets, including the Baltic Sea and the Scotland-Belgium corridor. Its fleet strategy included both acquisitions and disposals as the company refined its route portfolio. Blue Star Ferries became the group's principal domestic Greek platform. In 2006, Blue Star Maritime acquired the assets of DANE Sea Line, including the Diagoras, which was assigned to Dodecanese routes. The same period saw Attica sell some passenger catamarans and international vessels while retaining or reallocating other ships. These actions reflected a preference for modern conventional car-passenger ferries and for concentrating resources on strategically important routes. Attica also pursued ownership positions in other Greek ferry operators. It acquired a stake in Hellenic Seaways in the mid-2000s, later sold that initial interest, and subsequently returned as a controlling investor. In 2018 it secured a 50.3% controlling interest and raised its total ownership to 98.83% in June. The last minority interest was purchased in 2019. Hellenic Seaways consequently became an important subsidiary serving Greek domestic routes. International diversification continued in 2016 through the formation of Africa Morocco Link, a joint venture with BMCE Bank and Moroccan investors. Attica held 49% of the venture, which operated scheduled services between Morocco and Europe. The investment was later exited when Attica sold its stake to Stena Line in 2024. The group's largest recent expansion came through the acquisition of ANEK Lines. The transaction, completed in the 2020s, added ANEK's vessels, routes and established customer base to the Attica portfolio. The combined group operates through four prominent ferry subsidiaries or brands: ANEK Lines, Blue Star Ferries, Hellenic Seaways and Superfast Ferries. The enlarged operation has been described as Europe's second-largest ferry operator by passenger volume and has a fleet of approximately 39 ships according to the cited reference material. Attica has faced serious scrutiny over conduct connected with its ferry operations. In January 2023, an investigative consortium reported alleged pushbacks of asylum seekers from Italy to Greece on Superfast services and alleged that some people were kept in concealed or restrictive spaces. In September of the same year, a passenger died after being pushed from the Blue Horizon loading ramp during an attempted boarding. Four crew members were arrested, and prosecutors brought charges involving the death and alleged breaches of shipping regulations. The incidents placed passenger safety, crew conduct and the group's human-rights obligations at the center of public debate. The modern Attica Group is therefore the result of a long transition from flour manufacturing and general commerce to integrated maritime transport. It combines international Adriatic operations with extensive Greek island coverage and serves both leisure passengers and commercial traffic through a portfolio of recognizable ferry brands.
