History
Astral Spirits Records emerged from Nathan Cross's interest in building a durable role in music without relying on continuous touring. During the early 2010s, Cross considered either starting a record label or creating a live-recorded series. While developing the idea, he spoke with Morgan Coy of Monofonus Press, who encouraged him to establish a label under the Monofonus umbrella. Cross ultimately launched Astral Spirits in Austin, Texas, in 2014. The label's name came from Joe McPhee's recurring use of the phrase “Astral Spirits” in song titles. McPhee first used the title on Trinity, recorded in 1971, and later returned to it in works including Oleo and In the Spirit. The reference connected Cross's project to the history of free jazz while allowing the label to pursue new and adjacent forms of experimental music. Astral Spirits began as a cassette label, reflecting the accessible and small-batch production practices common in underground music. Its physical programme later expanded to vinyl and compact discs, and the catalogue was also made available digitally. The label has maintained a distinctive distribution philosophy by declining to place its catalogue on low-revenue services such as Spotify, favoring physical purchases and digital channels that offer a closer connection to specialist listeners. Cross has carried out most of the label's operational work, including curation, publicity, shipping, and general logistics. Visual production has been collaborative. Mason McFee designed the logo, selected the Cooper Black typeface that became part of the label's identity, and produced the artwork for the first two years of tape and LP releases. Jaime Zuverza later took over design responsibilities and developed a recognizable template for the label's releases. Zuverza's work is informed by listening to the recordings and creating imagery for the specific music rather than applying a purely generic house style. The label's initial brief centered on heavy free jazz, but its catalogue developed into a wider field encompassing improvisation, experimental composition, avant-garde jazz, and other forms of challenging or difficult-to-classify music. This expansion led Cross to create Astral Editions in 2019. The imprint was first imagined as a digital-only outlet. In 2020 it began issuing physical products, and it became the part of the operation most explicitly devoted to experimental music outside the jazz continuum. Its curatorial message presents the imprint as a means of introducing listeners to strong but insufficiently known experimental artists. Astral Spirits has been covered by publications including Bandcamp Daily, All About Jazz, the Chicago Reader, DownBeat, and Free Jazz Collective. Rolling Stone has described the label as crucial and exceptionally prolific, and Tiny Mix Tapes placed it among its preferred labels of the 2010s. These notices helped establish Astral Spirits as a significant specialist label within contemporary free jazz and experimental music.
