ARP Instruments, Inc. was an American manufacturer of electronic musical instruments based in Lexington, Massachusetts. It required a specially mounted hexaphonic pickup and separate pitch-to-voltage processing for the strings of an electric guitar. ARP was unable to recover the project’s research and development costs. Subsequent products, including the Quadra, the 4-Voice and 16-Voice Piano designs, and the Solus, did not restore the company’s financial position. ARP Instruments declared bankruptcy in May 1981 and was liquidated. During the liquidation, chief engineer Philip Dodds helped arrange the sale of the 4-Voice Piano and a working prototype of the ARP Chroma to CBS Musical Instruments. CBS completed development and manufacturing of the Chroma, which was sold as the Rhodes Chroma from 1982 until late 1983. ARP therefore disappeared as an operating manufacturer, but its engineering work influenced later electronic-instrument design. In 2015, Korg revived the ARP Odyssey in collaboration with David Friend, giving one of the company’s best-known designs a new production life under a different manufacturer.
History
ARP Instruments developed during the transition from experimental electronic sound generation to commercially usable synthesizers. Its founder, Alan Robert Pearlman, studied engineering at Worcester Polytechnic Institute in 1948 and became interested in the future role of electronic instruments. Korg’s 2015 reintroduction of the ARP Odyssey, made with David Friend’s cooperation, demonstrated the continuing commercial and cultural value of the company’s designs.
