The founders were the Sozialforschungsstelle an der Universität Münster with seat in Dortmund, the Landesverkehrsverband Westfalen, the Westfälische Heimatbund, the Westfälische Verwaltungsakademie e.V. Münster, and as a printing company the Verlag der Westdeutschen Allgemeinen Zeitung with the Westfalendruck GmbH. The company purpose defined in the articles of association was simply: 'The object of the company is the publishing, production and distribution of printed matter of any kind.' The publisher is more of a purpose alliance of the shareholders. Besides the 'Westfalenspiegel', the 'Illustrated magazine for culture and homeland care' in Westphalia, the program at the beginning ranged from highly scientific publications to general fiction works.
