History
ArcGIS is the software platform through which Esri organizes much of its modern geographic information system business. Esri was founded in 1969 by Jack and Laura Dangermond as the Environmental Systems Research Institute. The company initially worked on land-use planning and environmental-management projects before developing software products that allowed organizations to store, analyze, and display geographic information. During the 1980s and 1990s, Esri’s product family included ArcInfo, ArcView, and ArcEditor. These products served different levels of GIS work, from professional analysis and data management to desktop mapping and editing. The growing use of digital geographic data, personal computers, relational databases, and networked systems created demand for a more integrated architecture.
