Overview
Apple TV is a line of compact digital media players developed, manufactured, and sold by Apple Inc. The devices connect televisions and home theater systems to online video, music, podcast, photo, gaming, and smart-home services. They can also receive content from Apple devices and computers through AirPlay, allowing users to cast media or mirror a screen wirelessly. The product is therefore both a streaming receiver and an extension of Apple's wider hardware and software ecosystem. Apple introduced the first-generation Apple TV in 2007. Originally announced under the name iTV, the product was renamed before launch after a trademark conflict involving the ITV television network. History
Apple's Apple TV project followed earlier attempts to bring the company into the living room, including the Macintosh TV and the unreleased Apple Interactive Television Box. The first Apple TV was announced in September 2006 under the provisional name iTV and shipped in March 2007. It used an Intel Pentium M processor, a variant of Mac OS X, an internal hard drive, and HDMI output up to 720p. Its initial operating model depended heavily on synchronization with iTunes on a Mac or Windows computer. Apple's February 2008 software update, commonly known as Take 2, broadened the device's role by enabling direct access to selected Internet services and iTunes Store content without requiring computer synchronization. A later software update added features such as Internet radio, content filtering, iTunes Extras, and an updated interface. Despite these improvements, the first-generation device remained fundamentally a hard-drive-based companion to a computer and was eventually discontinued. The second-generation model, released in September 2010, marked a strategic change. It was substantially smaller, used an Apple A4 chip and flash storage, and focused on streaming rather than storing a large local media library. Its software was derived from iOS and supported services such as Netflix. AirTunes was renamed AirPlay, making wireless streaming from iOS devices and Macs a central part of the product's appeal. The third-generation Apple TV arrived in 2012 with an A5 processor and 1080p output. It retained the second generation's external design but expanded video capabilities and received revised software. Apple later released a lower-power hardware revision in 2013. In 2021, Apple released a second-generation 4K model with the A12 Bionic chip, high-frame-rate HDR, HDMI 2.1-related features, Wi-Fi 6, and a redesigned remote. The model also supported advanced audio-routing features through ARC and eARC and included a Thread radio in suitable configurations. The third-generation Apple TV 4K was announced in October 2022. Apple replaced the A12 with an A15 Bionic processor, removed the internal fan to reduce size and weight, added HDR10+, introduced a 64 GB Wi-Fi configuration and a 128 GB configuration with Ethernet and Thread, and moved Siri Remote charging to USB-C.
