Overview
Antam, formally PT Aneka Tambang Tbk, is an Indonesian integrated mining company whose principal activities include the exploration, extraction, processing and sale of mineral resources. Its best-known businesses are gold and nickel, while its broader portfolio has also included silver, bauxite and ferronickel. The company combines resource development with processing, refining and the marketing of mineral and precious-metal products, giving it a role across several stages of the mining value chain. Established by the Indonesian government in 1968 through the consolidation of several state mining enterprises, Antam became a limited company in 1974. It was listed on Indonesia’s Jakarta Stock Exchange in 1997, making public-market access part of its corporate structure while it continued to operate as a strategically important state-linked miner. Until 2017, the Indonesian government directly controlled the company. In that year, the government transferred its controlling interest to PT Indonesia Asahan Aluminium (Inalum), now operating within the MIND ID state mining holding structure. This reorganization was intended to consolidate Indonesia’s major mining assets under a national holding company. Nickel is central to Antam’s industrial identity. The company has been described as Indonesia’s largest nickel producer and has developed activities in nickel ore and ferronickel. Its nickel business has been shaped by Indonesia’s restrictions on the export of unprocessed ores, which encouraged domestic smelting and downstream processing. Antam therefore operates in a policy environment that links mining projects with national objectives for mineral beneficiation, stainless-steel production and, increasingly, battery-material supply chains. The company has also been associated with proposed electric-vehicle battery ventures involving Indonesian state-owned energy and utility companies and potential international technology partners. Gold is another major business. Antam markets refined gold and bullion products, including branded gold bars, and its gold operations have historically been an important source of revenue. The company has stated that its gold-refining activities are accredited by the London Bullion Market Association, a distinction relevant to the marketability and institutional recognition of refined precious-metal products. Silver and bauxite form additional elements of its mineral portfolio, although the relative importance of individual commodities can change with production levels, prices, regulations and project status. Antam is listed on the Indonesia Stock Exchange under ANTM. Its performance is affected by commodity-price movements, ore-export rules, domestic-processing requirements, environmental and permitting obligations, smelter development, reserve quality and the broader policies of the Indonesian government and MIND ID. In January 2025, former executives were charged in a corruption investigation concerning alleged mismanagement and fraudulent activity involving gold between 2010 and 2022. Antam denied producing counterfeit gold, while the allegations prompted scrutiny from the London Bullion Market Association. The company’s current operations, governance and financial position should be assessed using its latest annual reports, exchange disclosures and regulatory announcements.
History
Antam was created in 1968 by the Indonesian government through the merger of several state-owned mining companies. The consolidation established a diversified mining platform rather than a single-commodity producer, allowing the company to develop activities in nickel, gold, silver, bauxite and related mineral products. Its formation took place during the period of state-led industrial organization in Indonesia and gave the government a vehicle for managing strategically important mineral resources. In 1974, Antam was reorganized as a limited company. This corporate form supported the development of a more formal commercial and investment structure while the company remained state controlled. Antam later entered Indonesia’s public equity market, listing on the Jakarta Stock Exchange in 1997. The listing increased transparency and enabled public trading of the company’s shares, but did not remove its strategic connection with the Indonesian state. The company’s operating model expanded beyond the extraction and sale of ores. Its portfolio included nickel mining and ferronickel production, gold mining and refining, silver-related products, and bauxite. Gold became an especially visible consumer-facing business through refined gold and bullion products. Antam has also been identified as Indonesia’s largest nickel producer. Its nickel activities were affected by the government’s prohibition on exporting unprocessed ore, a policy that reduced the attractiveness of simple ore exports and encouraged investment in smelters and domestic processing facilities for ferronickel and alumina. Indonesia’s downstreaming policy became an important influence on Antam’s strategy. Rather than treating mineral resources solely as export commodities, the policy framework encouraged processing inside Indonesia and the development of industries using refined or semi-processed materials. Antam’s nickel activities consequently became relevant not only to traditional mining and stainless-steel supply chains but also to proposals for electric-vehicle battery materials. In 2020, the company was reported as a participant in plans for an Indonesian battery venture with Pertamina and PLN, with Antam expected to contribute upstream raw materials and metals. Proposed cooperation with international battery companies was also discussed, although project structures and implementation should be checked against current company disclosures. A major ownership change occurred in 2017. Until then, the Indonesian government directly controlled 65 percent of Antam. The controlling interest was transferred to Inalum as part of a broader plan to establish a national mining holding company. Antam subsequently became part of MIND ID, the Indonesian state mining holding group, while retaining its stock-market listing. This arrangement placed Antam within a coordinated state-owned mining portfolio and linked its strategic decisions to national resource policy as well as commercial considerations. Antam’s later history has included the continuing management of commodity-price exposure, processing capacity, mining permits, environmental requirements and changing rules for mineral exports. The company’s gold business has remained prominent, and its refinery has been described as Indonesia’s only gold refinery accredited by the London Bullion Market Association. In January 2025, six former executives were charged in a corruption case involving alleged mismanagement and fraudulent activity concerning 109 tons of gold over the period from 2010 to 2022. The allegations generated external scrutiny, including a review by the London Bullion Market Association. Antam denied producing counterfeit gold. The case forms part of the company’s governance history but does not by itself establish the allegations as proven. Today, Antam remains a listed, state-controlled Indonesian mining company with a diversified mineral portfolio. Its development is closely tied to Indonesia’s efforts to increase domestic mineral processing and capture more value from nickel and other resources. Because its production mix, projects, ownership arrangements and regulatory exposure may change, current operating information should be taken from Antam’s latest reports and official disclosures.

Products and positioning
A state-linked Indonesian mining and mineral-processing company combining upstream resource development with downstream processing and precious-metal refining.
Gold productsPrecious metals
Antam’s gold business includes mined, refined and marketed precious-metal products, including branded gold bars. The range is a prominent consumer-facing part of the company and has historically contributed substantially to revenue. Product weights, purity specifications, distribution channels and availability can change, so current details should be confirmed through Antam’s official product information.
Nickel productsNickel mining and processing
Antam’s nickel operations include the extraction of nickel resources and the production or sale of processed nickel materials such as ferronickel. These activities supply downstream industries, including stainless-steel manufacturing, and are increasingly relevant to Indonesia’s battery-material ambitions. The precise product mix depends on individual mines, plants, contracts and reporting periods.
Silver productsPrecious metals
Silver is part of Antam’s broader precious-metals portfolio. The business may involve silver-bearing mineral production, refining and related products, although publicly available reference material does not establish a complete current catalogue of formats, grades or sales channels.
Bauxite productsBauxite mining and processing
Bauxite has been one of Antam’s diversified mineral-resource businesses. Activities have included resource extraction and supply of bauxite-related material, with Indonesia’s restrictions on unprocessed-ore exports creating incentives for domestic processing. Current production and processing arrangements should be checked against the company’s latest disclosures.
FerronickelNickel-processing product
Ferronickel is a processed nickel product associated with Antam’s effort to move beyond the export of unprocessed ore. It is intended for industrial downstream use, particularly in stainless-steel-related supply chains. Output and commercial significance depend on smelter operations, ore availability, regulations and market conditions.
