Overview
Anglesey Aluminium was the operating name associated with Anglesey Aluminium Metal Ltd., an industrial aluminium smelting joint venture between Rio Tinto and Kaiser Aluminum. Its principal asset was a large primary aluminium smelter on the outskirts of Holyhead, on the Isle of Anglesey in north-west Wales. The plant began production in 1971 and became one of the largest employers in North Wales, with a workforce reported at approximately 540 people during its operating period. The smelter was built on the Penrhos Estate, part of which was sold by the Stanley family for the industrial project. Its location was chosen in part because aluminium production requires exceptionally large and continuous supplies of electricity. Anglesey Aluminium drew power from the National Grid and received most of its electricity from Wylfa nuclear power station, approximately 15 miles away. The smelter served as a substantial base-load customer for Wylfa and was described as the United Kingdom's largest single electricity user, with demand reaching about 255 megawatts. The operation was integrated with maritime and rail logistics. Alumina and petroleum coke arrived by ship from overseas suppliers, including Jamaica and Australia, at a private jetty in Holyhead Harbour. Conveyor systems, including sections routed through tunnels, connected the jetty with the smelting plant. A rail spur from the North Wales Coast Line allowed raw materials to be received and aluminium to be dispatched. At its peak, the facility could produce as much as 142,000 tonnes of aluminium per year, making it a significant part of Britain's primary metals infrastructure. The business was highly exposed to electricity costs and the terms of its long-term power arrangements. When the relevant electricity contract ended in 2009, no replacement agreement was secured and the primary smelting operation ceased. An aluminium re-melt facility continued for a period after the main smelter closed, but its closure was announced in February 2013. The former site was subsequently mothballed and proposals for alternative uses, including a biomass plant, were considered but did not restore aluminium smelting. In September 2022, the former Anglesey Aluminium site was reported to have been purchased by Stena Line for a proposed expansion of its Holyhead port operations. The transaction included the former plant land, the rail spur, the harbour jetty and the conveyor tunnel linking the jetty to the industrial site. Clearance of the former smelting complex was undertaken in preparation for redevelopment. On 20 March 2024, the site's approximately 450-foot chimney was demolished, removing the last major visible structure associated with the aluminium smelter. Anglesey Aluminium is therefore best understood as a defunct industrial enterprise and an important chapter in the industrial history of Anglesey, rather than as an active consumer-facing aluminium brand.
History
Anglesey Aluminium Metal Ltd. operated one of Britain's largest primary aluminium smelters at Holyhead on Anglesey, Wales. The project was developed as a joint venture between Rio Tinto and Kaiser Aluminum and was established on the Penrhos Estate, where approximately 500 acres were made available for the industrial development. Production began in 1971. The Holyhead plant was designed around the distinctive requirements of aluminium smelting. Primary aluminium is produced by electrolytically reducing alumina, a process that consumes very large quantities of electricity continuously. The business therefore depended not only on access to imported raw materials and transport infrastructure but also on a reliable and competitively priced power supply. The smelter was connected to the National Grid and received most of its electricity from Wylfa nuclear power station, located roughly 15 miles from the site. Its continuous demand provided a major base-load use for Wylfa and reduced the need for equivalent generating capacity to remain available elsewhere on the system. A re-melt facility initially remained in operation, allowing some continued aluminium processing after the primary smelter had closed. Its closure was announced in February 2013. After the end of aluminium production, the site was mothballed and alternative redevelopment possibilities were examined. Tentative proposals included a biomass power plant, but the former smelting operation was not restarted. In September 2022, Stena Line was reported to have acquired the former Anglesey Aluminium site. The transaction included the industrial land together with the rail spur, the private jetty at Holyhead Harbour and the former conveyor tunnel. Stena's stated intention was to use the property in connection with an extension of its existing Holyhead port operations. Site clearance followed as part of redevelopment preparation. On 20 March 2024, the approximately 450-foot chimney was demolished. It was described as the final prominent visible structure of the aluminium smelting plant. The physical removal of the complex marked the end of Anglesey Aluminium's presence as an operating smelter and confirmed its transition from an active manufacturing enterprise to a site of industrial and local historical significance.
