Overview
Amuse Inc. is a Japanese entertainment company whose core business is the management and development of artists, including musicians, idol groups, actors, models, and other performers. The company also operates across entertainment production and distribution, covering television and radio programs, commercial films, feature films, music publishing and labels, video software, digital commerce, and international artist and content activities. Its business model combines long-term talent representation with the creation, financing, production, licensing, and distribution of entertainment content. The company traces its origins to 1978, when it signed the rock band Southern All Stars. That relationship established an artist-management foundation around which Amuse expanded into broader entertainment services. During the 1980s it moved into cinema production and distribution through Amuse Cinema City and established an overseas subsidiary in the United States. It later added video production and sales, theater operations, music labels, e-commerce, education and entertainment initiatives, and overseas subsidiaries. Film has been an important part of Amuse's corporate development. The company produced early Japanese films including Morning Moon Wa Sozatsu Ni and Aiko 16 sai, while its distribution activities later included The Pianist, which won the Palme d'Or at the 2002 Cannes Film Festival, and the Japanese historical drama The Eternal Zero. These activities illustrate Amuse's role not only as a talent agency but also as a producer, distributor, and rights-oriented entertainment group. Amuse has used partnerships and subsidiaries to broaden its reach. It established Amuse Korea in 2000, launched the online commerce site Ambra in 2004, formed the Taishita music label with Victor Entertainment in 2007, and created A-Sketch with KDDI in 2008. It also invested in Brussels, a Belgian beer-bar business, formed Amuse Edutainment in 2009, opened Amuse Singapore in 2012, and created Amuse France in 2015. In the United States, the company developed J-Creation to strengthen links between Japanese and American entertainment industries and later released an English-language graphic novel connected with Babymetal. The company has also maintained activities in modeling and youth talent development. Amuse Models was established in 2004, with a related Amuse Kids division for younger performers. Following a 2014 merger with Will Corporation, Amuse established a modeling agency focused primarily on teenage talent. The group has additionally pursued new forms of entertainment, founding Kulture Inc. in 2022 to explore Web3, metaverse, and non-fungible-token-related content. Amuse's international strategy has generally centered on exporting Japanese artists and intellectual property rather than operating as a mass-market consumer brand. Its interests span management, content creation, licensing, live and recorded entertainment, publishing, and selected adjacent businesses. In February 2025, Amuse sold its 66% majority stake in A-Sketch to Universal Music Group's Japanese subsidiary for an undisclosed amount, marking a significant change in one of its music-label investments. The company remains best understood as a diversified Japanese talent and entertainment group rather than a cosmetics or beauty company.
History
Amuse Inc. began in 1978 with the signing of Southern All Stars, a Japanese rock band that became central to the company's early identity and demonstrated its emphasis on artist development. Rather than remaining solely a representation agency, Amuse progressively built capabilities in content production, distribution, and adjacent entertainment businesses. In 1981, the company established Amuse Cinema City as a film-production and distribution subsidiary. It produced Morning Moon Wa Sozatsu Ni in the same year and followed with Aiko 16 sai in 1983. Amuse also signed actress Yasuko Tomita in 1983 and opened a United States subsidiary the following year, combining talent management with early overseas development. The group entered video through Amuse Video in 1990, creating a dedicated production and sales operation for video software. In 1995 it established Ayers through a joint venture with Bandai and opened its first movie theater. The company expanded into Korea in 2000 through Amuse Korea and became listed on the Osaka Securities Exchange on 20 September 2001. Its film activities gained international recognition when The Pianist, distributed by Amuse, won the Palme d'Or at the 2002 Cannes Film Festival. Amuse continued to broaden its commercial infrastructure in the 2000s. It launched the Ambra e-commerce site in 2004 and created the Taishita label in 2007 through a joint venture with Victor Entertainment. In 2008, it invested in Brussels, a Belgian beer-bar business, and formed A-Sketch with KDDI. These moves reflected a strategy of combining music rights and artist businesses with selected lifestyle, retail, and partnership opportunities. Amuse Edutainment was established in 2009. International expansion continued with Amuse Singapore in 2012 and Amuse France in 2015. The Singapore operation was associated with efforts to give renewed international exposure to Japanese pop and rock acts such as Flumpool and Weaver. In the United States, Amuse launched J-Creation to develop relationships between Japanese and American entertainment industries. The company also strengthened its connection with Japanese popular-culture intellectual property through Amuse USA's 2018 release of the graphic novel Apocrypha: The Legend of Babymetal. Talent discovery remained another pillar. Amuse Models was founded in 2004, with Amuse Kids used for child talent activities. In 2014, Amuse merged with Will Corporation and subsequently established a modeling agency primarily representing teenage talents. This broadened the company’s pipeline beyond established singers and actors. The company also pursued emerging digital formats. In 2022 it founded Kulture Inc. to explore Web3 and metaverse entertainment, including NFT-related projects. At the investment and partnership level, Amuse formed a relationship with New Japan Pro-Wrestling in January 2016 and held shares in the promotion. In February 2025, it sold its 66% majority stake in A-Sketch to Universal Music Group's Japanese subsidiary for an undisclosed amount. Amuse therefore developed from a talent-management business into a diversified entertainment group spanning artist representation, music, film, television, video, modeling, international activities, publishing, and experimental digital media.
