Overview
Ampere is an electric-vehicle and automotive-software company created by Groupe Renault in 2023 as a central element of the third phase of the group's Renaulution recovery and transformation plan. The company was announced in November 2022 as part of Renault chief executive Luca de Meo's effort to reorganize the group around more specialized businesses and reposition Renault as a next-generation car company. Ampere was designed to bring together the development of battery-electric passenger vehicles, dedicated vehicle platforms, connected-car technologies and software capabilities. Renault initially intended to establish Ampere as a separately listed company on the Paris stock exchange, while retaining a majority stake. The proposed public offering was expected to provide the electric-vehicle unit with a distinct capital structure and greater strategic visibility. Renault abandoned the IPO plan on 29 January 2024, citing unfavorable equity-market conditions. Despite the cancellation, Ampere continued to operate as an autonomous business within the Renault Group rather than being dissolved or reintegrated into the conventional Renault structure. The business supplies vehicle technology and electric models principally for Renault and other brands associated with the Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi alliance. Its work is organized around modular platforms that can support multiple vehicle sizes and brands. AmpR Small, formerly known as the CMF-B EV platform, is intended for compact electric vehicles and underpins or is associated with models such as the Renault 5 E-Tech, Renault 4 E-Tech, Alpine A290, Nissan Micra EV and the planned Renault Twingo E-Tech. AmpR Medium, previously called CMF-EV, supports larger electric vehicles including the Renault Mégane E-Tech, Renault Scénic E-Tech, Nissan Ariya and Alpine A390. Ampere's role extends beyond vehicle assembly. The company is intended to integrate electric powertrain engineering, battery-related development, vehicle architecture, digital functions and software into a specialist organization. Renault has described the business as a pure electric-vehicle and software player created through the disruption of an established automotive manufacturer. In practical terms, this positioning allows the group to share platforms and technologies across brands while adapting vehicles to different market segments. The business has attracted participation from alliance partners. In October 2023, Mitsubishi announced that it could invest up to €200 million in Ampere, subject to the relevant arrangements. The planned investment reflected the potential for cooperation on electric vehicles within the Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi alliance. Ampere's model portfolio includes vehicles already in production as well as future programs, including the Renault 4 E-Tech, the Nissan Micra EV, the Alpine A390, a Mitsubishi electric hatchback and the next-generation Renault Twingo E-Tech. Ampere should not be confused with Ampere Vehicles, an Indian electric two-wheeler brand associated with Greaves Electric Mobility. The subject covered here is the French Renault Group business described in the Wikipedia article Ampere (company).
History
Ampere emerged from Groupe Renault's Renaulution transformation program, which sought to improve the group's financial resilience, sharpen its brand structure and accelerate the transition to electric mobility. Renault announced the business on 8 November 2022 as a proposed standalone entity dedicated to electric vehicles and software. The plan reflected a wider reorganization in which specialist activities would receive more focused management and capital allocation. The proposed company was associated with Renault's intention to become what management described as a next-generation car company. Rather than treating electric vehicles as only one product category inside the traditional automotive organization, Renault planned to consolidate electric-car engineering, digital technologies and related software capabilities within Ampere. The structure was also expected to support technology sharing among Renault, Alpine, Nissan and Mitsubishi. Renault planned an initial public offering for Ampere on the Paris stock exchange from the second half of 2023 and intended to retain a majority holding. The listing was meant to give the business an independent valuation and access to capital while preserving Renault's control. In October 2023, Mitsubishi announced a possible investment of up to €200 million, signaling alliance-level interest in Ampere's development. On 29 January 2024, Renault canceled the IPO plan. The company cited current equity-market conditions rather than a decision to abandon Ampere's strategic purpose. Following the cancellation, Ampere remained an autonomous business within Renault Group. Its role continued to center on electric vehicles, software and common platforms for several Renault Group and alliance models. Ampere's platform strategy includes AmpR Small and AmpR Medium. AmpR Small was previously identified as CMF-B EV and is aimed at smaller electric cars, with applications including the Renault 5 E-Tech, Renault 4 E-Tech, Alpine A290, Nissan Micra EV and the planned Renault Twingo E-Tech. AmpR Medium, formerly CMF-EV, serves larger electric vehicles such as the Renault Mégane E-Tech, Renault Scénic E-Tech, Nissan Ariya and Alpine A390. The resulting business is both a technology organization and a vehicle-development operation. It does not represent a conventional independent carmaker with a broad dealer network and a separate mass-market badge; instead, it develops the architectures and products used by established Renault Group and alliance brands. Its significance lies in concentrating electric-vehicle know-how, software development and platform standardization within a dedicated organization while retaining access to Renault's industrial and commercial system.
