Overview
Amersham plc was a British healthcare and life-science company whose origins lay in the wartime and postwar processing of radioactive materials at Chilcote House in Little Chalfont, near Amersham, Buckinghamshire. The site began extracting radium from concentrates in 1940 under Walter Patrick Grove. During the following years it produced radium bromide for luminous dials and instruments, before being taken over by the Ministry of Supply in 1946 and developed into a national facility for processing and distributing radium, radon, and artificial radioactive substances for scientific, medical, and industrial use. The operation adopted the name The Radiochemical Centre, Amersham, in 1949. Its remit expanded beyond radium to include materials such as carbon-14, radioactive capsules for cancer treatment, and other radioisotopes. In 1950 it became an outstation of the Atomic Energy Research Establishment at Harwell. By the 1960s, the centre had built an unusually broad catalogue of radiochemical products, used more than one hundred isotopes, exported to dozens of countries, and installed a cyclotron for medical isotope production. A second production site was developed in Cardiff from 1976, supporting the organization’s growing industrial and international footprint. In 1971, following restructuring of the United Kingdom Atomic Energy Authority, The Radiochemical Centre became a limited company. It later changed its name to Amersham International Limited and was privatized in 1982 as Amersham International plc. The transaction was historically significant because it was the first privatization in which the British government sold all of its shares in a company. The government retained a special share for a period, enabling it to veto certain outsourcing arrangements; that share was redeemed in 1988. Amersham subsequently broadened its activities from radiochemicals into in-vitro diagnostics, molecular biology, biotechnology, and other life-science tools. Its diagnostics business was placed into a joint venture with Eastman Kodak in the early 1990s and later passed through Kodak and Johnson & Johnson ownership before becoming part of Ortho Clinical Diagnostics. In 1997, Amersham Life Science was combined with Pharmacia Biotech, creating Amersham Pharmacia Biotech. After Amersham acquired the relevant interest, the business was renamed Amersham Biosciences in 2001. The corporate group also changed shape through a 1997 merger with Norway’s Nycomed, becoming Nycomed Amersham plc. Nycomed Pharma was sold to Nordic Capital in 1999, and the remaining company adopted the shorter name Amersham plc in 2001. Its businesses were generally associated with two broad areas: medical diagnostics, particularly radiopharmaceuticals and imaging-related products, and life sciences, including research reagents, instruments, and biotechnology supplies. General Electric agreed to acquire Amersham in 2004, after which the company was absorbed into GE Healthcare rather than continuing as an independent listed group. The former Amersham businesses became part of GE Healthcare Medical Diagnostics and GE Healthcare Life Sciences. The original Buckinghamshire site remained associated with GE Healthcare for many years, while the Cardiff operation was later consolidated and partly redeveloped. In 2005, the Royal Society of Chemistry designated the former Amersham Laboratories, then known as the Grove Centre under GE, an historic chemical landmark in recognition of its contributions to industrial and medical applications. GE Healthcare Life Sciences was ultimately acquired by Danaher in 2020 and renamed Cytiva, extending the lineage of Amersham’s life-science activities beyond the company’s independent existence.
History
Amersham’s history began at Chilcote House in Little Chalfont, close to Amersham in Buckinghamshire. In 1940 the site was used to extract radium from concentrates under Walter Patrick Grove. Over the next four years, the facility produced more than five hundred kilograms of radium bromide for luminous dials and instruments. In 1946 the Ministry of Supply took control and developed the location as a national centre for processing and distributing radium, radon, and artificial radioactive substances for scientific, medical, and industrial purposes. The site was renamed The Radiochemical Centre, Amersham, in 1949. Its products included radium gas capsules used in cancer treatment and carbon-14, alongside other radiochemical materials. In 1950 the centre became an outstation of the Atomic Energy Research Establishment at Harwell, linking its manufacturing role with the United Kingdom’s nuclear research infrastructure. Expansion during the following decades made it an international supplier of isotope-based products. By the 1960s, the organization had more than one thousand catalogue items, worked with over one hundred isotopes, exported to approximately sixty countries, and had installed a cyclotron intended for medical isotope production. A second production facility was begun in Cardiff in 1976. A restructuring of the United Kingdom Atomic Energy Authority in 1971 turned The Radiochemical Centre into a limited company. The company later became Amersham International Limited and, in 1982, Amersham International plc. Its privatization was a landmark in the Thatcher-era program because the government sold its entire shareholding, rather than retaining an ordinary equity stake. A special share gave the government limited veto rights over outsourcing arrangements until it was redeemed in 1988. During the 1990s, Amersham expanded beyond its original radiochemical base. Its in-vitro diagnostic assay activities were placed into Amerlite Diagnostics Ltd, a joint venture with Eastman Kodak. Kodak subsequently acquired the business outright and renamed it Kodak Clinical Diagnostics. Johnson & Johnson later acquired that business, which became Johnson & Johnson Clinical Diagnostics and ultimately Ortho Clinical Diagnostics. Amersham also developed a substantial life-science division. In 1997, Amersham Life Science was combined with Sweden’s Pharmacia Biotech, then owned by Pharmacia & Upjohn, producing Amersham Pharmacia Biotech. After Pharmacia & Upjohn disposed of its interest, Amersham took full control and the subsidiary was renamed Amersham Biosciences in 2001. The wider company merged with Norwegian healthcare group Nycomed in 1997 and became Nycomed Amersham plc. Nycomed Pharma was sold to Nordic Capital in 1999, and the remaining organization returned to the Amersham plc name in 2001. The company’s later portfolio combined medical diagnostics with life-science research products. Radiopharmaceuticals and other isotope-based offerings served diagnostic and therapeutic nuclear medicine, while the life-science business supplied research materials and technologies for biotechnology and laboratory work. This combination made Amersham a specialist healthcare group with activities spanning clinical applications and research markets. General Electric acquired Amersham in 2004 and integrated the company into GE Healthcare. The former businesses were organized principally as GE Healthcare Medical Diagnostics and GE Healthcare Life Sciences. GE Healthcare retained a UK presence near Amersham, and the former Amersham site remained associated with the business until later consolidation. In 2005, the Royal Society of Chemistry designated the former Amersham Laboratories, then known as the Grove Centre under GE, an historic chemical landmark for its achievements in industrial and medical applications over six decades. The corporate succession continued after Amersham disappeared as an independent company. Part of the Cardiff site was sold for redevelopment in 2018 as operations were consolidated. In 2020, Danaher acquired GE Healthcare Life Sciences and renamed the business Cytiva. This transaction transferred a significant part of Amersham’s life-science legacy into a new corporate owner, while the Amersham plc name remained a historical reference rather than an active independent brand.
