Overview
Amdocs is a multinational enterprise software and technology-services company focused on communications, media, and digital-service businesses. Its roots are in the information-systems needs of telephone companies: billing, customer-account administration, directory services, and the operational processes required to launch and manage telecommunications products. Since its formation in Israel in 1982, the company has developed from a communications billing specialist into a broad provider of software platforms, cloud technologies, consulting, systems integration, and managed operations. The company’s capabilities span customer experience, product and offer management, ordering, charging, billing, revenue management, digital commerce, service assurance, network automation, data and analytics, and business support systems. Amdocs also serves media, entertainment, and pay-TV companies, where comparable requirements arise around subscriptions, content monetization, customer management, distribution, and digital-service operations. Its customers generally operate complex, high-volume businesses in which commercial, network, and customer systems must work together across mobile, fixed-line, broadband, television, and digital channels. Amdocs expanded internationally as telecommunications markets liberalized and mobile services grew. It supplemented internal product development with acquisitions in billing, customer relationship management, network policy and charging, managed services, content monetization, service assurance, and cloud migration. This expansion broadened the company’s role from supplying particular applications to helping operators transform and run large portions of their technology environments. The company’s commercial model combines enterprise software with professional services. Depending on the engagement, Amdocs may provide licensed or subscription-based technology, implementation and integration work, consulting, application development, infrastructure or cloud-transition assistance, and ongoing managed services. Long-term contracts and embedded operational knowledge are important aspects of its positioning, because communications providers typically require highly reliable systems, regulatory compliance, support for large customer volumes, and integration with legacy platforms. In the 2020s, Amdocs placed greater emphasis on cloud-native architecture, automation, 5G charging and policy control, service assurance, and artificial intelligence. In 2023 it introduced amAIz, a generative-artificial-intelligence framework aimed at telecommunications service providers and built with Nvidia technology running on Microsoft Azure. The company has described potential uses including customer-service assistance and the modernization of communications operations. Amdocs is headquartered in Chesterfield, Missouri, operates in more than 90 countries, and is listed on Nasdaq under DOX. Its principal identity remains that of an industry-focused technology partner for communications and media companies rather than a mass-market consumer brand.
History
Amdocs originated in Israel's communications and telephone-directory sector. In 1982, Morris Kahn, then associated with the Aurec Group and its Golden Pages directory business, worked with Boaz Dotan and others on billing software initially designed for directory companies. Dotan established Aurec Information and Directory Systems to commercialize the technology and became its first president and chief executive. The business was subsequently renamed Amdocs after Southwestern Bell Corporation acquired a 50 percent interest in 1985. The Aurec Group later sold its remaining holdings. During its first phase, Amdocs concentrated on billing and customer-information systems for communications companies. Between 1990 and 1995 it extended its activities from wireline telephony into mobile communications. These markets created demand for more sophisticated charging, product management, customer-care, and operational-support systems as operators introduced new services and managed increasingly diverse customer bases. Avi Naor succeeded Dotan as chief executive in 1995. Amdocs completed an initial public offering on the New York Stock Exchange in June 1998. After the IPO, the company expanded its software portfolio and geographic reach through both product development and acquisitions. It entered managed services in 1999 by acquiring International Telecommunication Data System Corporation. In the early 2000s it acquired or integrated businesses including DST Innovis, XACCT Technologies, Cramer Systems, Sigvalue, and Solect, adding capabilities in customer management, accounting and billing, policy and usage data, service assurance, and related communications operations. Dov Baharav became chief executive in 2002, followed by Eli Gelman in 2010. The company continued to broaden its role as operators moved from traditional voice services toward mobile data, broadband, digital commerce, and converged communications. Amdocs acquired Bridgewater Systems in 2011 and later obtained the business-support-system activities of Comverse Technology. These transactions reinforced its position in charging, policy control, customer management, and operator transformation. Amdocs also developed a substantial media and entertainment practice. Its acquisition of Vubiquity in 2018 added content monetization, processing, and distribution software and services for video and other digital-media businesses. Shuky Sheffer became president and chief executive in October 2018. In 2020, Amdocs acquired Openet, strengthening its capabilities in 5G charging, policy, and cloud technologies. In 2021 it expanded its cloud-transition activities through the acquisition of Sourced, a Canadian cloud-specialist company. The company’s later strategy emphasized cloud-native systems, automation, artificial intelligence, and modernization of legacy technology estates. In 2023 it announced the amAIz generative-AI framework for telecommunications providers, using Nvidia's AI Foundry service on Microsoft Azure. It also acquired Astadia and TEOCO's Service Assurance business during the same year, extending its cloud and network-operations capabilities. Amdocs remained a publicly traded company on Nasdaq and continued serving communications, media, digital-enterprise, and selected financial-services customers internationally. Shimie Hortig became president and chief executive effective March 31, 2026, following Sheffer's retirement.
