Overview
Alpina is a German performance-luxury automobile marque best known for developing low-volume, high-performance cars based on BMW platforms. Founded in Buchloe in 1965 by Burkard Bovensiepen, the company grew from a small BMW tuning operation into an officially recognized automobile manufacturer with its own engineering, production, identification and after-sales systems. Unlike a conventional aftermarket tuner, Alpina developed complete vehicles in close technical cooperation with BMW. Its work historically included engines, turbocharging, transmissions, suspension calibration, aerodynamics, wheels, interiors and vehicle-specific software. Alpina cars were assembled through a coordinated process involving BMW production plants and the Buchloe manufactory, where vehicles received further engineering work, bespoke interiors and final inspection. The company’s identity was built around a deliberately restrained interpretation of speed. Alpina generally avoided the overt visual aggression associated with many performance brands, instead combining very high power and long-distance capability with supple ride quality, quiet refinement and discreet styling. Its recognizable visual language included multi-spoke Alpina Classic wheels, fine pinstripe Deco-Set graphics, Alpina Blue and Alpina Green paintwork, hand-finished interiors, special instruments and understated aerodynamic components. The brand appealed to customers who wanted more exclusivity and individuality than a standard BMW, but greater comfort and subtlety than a track-oriented performance derivative. Alpina’s early history was closely connected to BMW competition and road-car development. In the 1960s, its twin-carburetor conversion for BMW engines established a relationship that eventually led to BMW warranty support for Alpina-equipped vehicles. Alpina’s racing activities became particularly prominent in the 1970s, when its BMW-based cars achieved major touring-car, hill-climb, rally and endurance-racing results. The company subsequently expanded its road-car portfolio from modified BMW 02 Series and 3 Series vehicles to powerful turbocharged sedans, coupés, convertibles, touring cars and executive automobiles. Beginning in the late 1970s, Alpina increasingly produced complete vehicles rather than merely supplying conversion kits. In 1983, it received official manufacturer recognition from the German Federal Motor Transport Authority. The model range developed around families such as the B3, B4, B5, B6, B7 and B8, with D3 and D5 diesel performance models and XD3 and XD4 sport-utility derivatives broadening the offering. The products were sold through selected BMW dealers and specialist distributors in Germany, Europe, Japan, North America and other markets. Production remained intentionally limited; BMW reported that approximately 2,000 vehicles were produced in Buchloe in 2021. BMW and Alpina maintained a long-standing technical and commercial cooperation. On March 10, 2022, BMW announced an agreement to acquire the ALPINA brand rights. The existing family-owned company continued to develop and manufacture the established vehicle program through the end of 2025, while the Bovensiepen family planned to redirect its business toward new activities under the Bovensiepen name. BMW stated that the Buchloe site would retain roles connected with service, parts, accessories and restoration for existing and historic Alpina vehicles. On January 1, 2026, BMW introduced BMW ALPINA as an exclusive standalone brand within the BMW Group portfolio. The new structure preserves Alpina’s historic emphasis on performance, comfort, craftsmanship, bespoke specification and discreet exclusivity while placing future brand development under BMW ownership. The former Alpina automobile company and its historic product portfolio remain important to collectors, while BMW ALPINA represents the marque’s next phase within the group.
History
Alpina’s history began within the BMW tuning scene rather than with the production of complete automobiles. In 1962, Burkard Bovensiepen created a Weber dual-carburetor system for the BMW 1500. The development received positive attention from automotive journalists and from BMW sales executive Paul G. Hahnemann. BMW subsequently certified the quality of vehicles fitted with the system by providing them with the company’s full factory warranty in 1964. Alpina Burkard Bovensiepen KG was established in Kaufbeuren, Bavaria, on 1 January 1965. The business initially had eight employees. The original Alpina enterprise had roots in typewriter production, but that activity later ended as the company concentrated on automotive engineering. Bovensiepen operated the BMW tuning business in an outbuilding of the typewriter factory, developing carburetors, cylinder heads, camshafts and related engine components. As the operation grew, it moved from Kaufbeuren to Buchloe in 1970. During the 1960s and 1970s, Alpina built its reputation through both technical development and motorsport. Its early engine work focused on extracting greater power and drivability from BMW units. The company’s logo, introduced in 1967, reflected this mechanical heritage through carburetor and camshaft imagery. Between 1968 and 1977, Alpina cars achieved notable results in European touring-car racing, German hill climbs, rallying and endurance competition. The high point came in 1970, when Alpina-supported cars won the European Touring Car Championship, the German Hillclimb Championship and the Spa 24 Hours, along with other racing titles. Alpina later shifted its resources toward road-car production. It officially withdrew from racing in 1988, citing limited capacity and the growing requirements of manufacturing a new generation of road vehicles. This change helped establish the modern Alpina formula: taking BMW platforms and transforming them through extensive engine, transmission, suspension, braking, aerodynamic and interior work. Alpina vehicles were not merely cosmetic conversions. Their powertrains were re-engineered, their chassis were recalibrated and their cabins were finished with distinct materials and trim. Since 1983, Germany’s Federal Ministry of Transport has recognized Alpina as an automobile manufacturer. This status distinguishes Alpina-built cars from ordinary aftermarket conversions: the vehicles are branded and registered as Alpina automobiles, while still being serviceable through BMW’s dealer and warranty networks. Alpina production has generally remained limited, with components and assembly moving between Buchloe and BMW facilities depending on the model. Engines could be specially built or modified by Alpina, installed into vehicles at BMW plants, and followed by Alpina finishing work. The brand’s design language developed around understated but recognizable details. Common elements have included Alpina Blue and Alpina Green paint, multi-spoke alloy wheels with concealed valves, thin gold or silver pinstripes, distinctive leather upholstery and numbered plaques. Mechanically, Alpina has often favored high torque and fast, comfortable touring over the high-revving, track-oriented character of BMW M cars. Alpina’s use of specially calibrated ZF automatic transmissions and steering-wheel shift controls became an important part of this identity. The range expanded across BMW’s major vehicle categories. Compact and executive models included the C1, C2 and B3, while larger cars were represented by the B5, B6, B7, B8, B10 and B12. The company also produced diesel derivatives such as the D3, D4 and D5, as well as SUV-based models including the XD3, XD4 and XB7. These products enabled Alpina to combine its low-volume manufacturing approach with practical body styles such as sedans, touring wagons and sport-utility vehicles. On 10 March 2022, BMW announced its intention to acquire Alpina and stated that it had officially acquired the brand. The acquisition moved Alpina into BMW’s ownership while maintaining its Buchloe heritage. The company was officially renamed BMW Alpina in 2025. Alpina consequently represents both an independent German engineering tradition and a BMW-owned luxury-performance marque.
