Overview
AJ Bell is a British financial services brand and public company focused on investment platforms, stockbroking, pensions and savings. Founded in Manchester in 1995 by Andy Bell and Nicholas Littlefair, the business initially developed services for financial advisers and investment professionals. It subsequently expanded into direct-to-consumer online investing, giving individual customers access to investment accounts, shares, funds, exchange-traded products, individual savings accounts and self-invested personal pensions. The company operates through a group of related businesses serving different customer segments. Its principal direct-to-consumer platform, now branded AJ Bell, provides individual investors with access to a SIPP, ISA and dealing account. AJ Bell Investcentre is an adviser-distributed platform available through financial advisers authorised by the Financial Conduct Authority. AJ Bell Platinum provides bespoke SIPP and small self-administered scheme services for customers requiring more tailored pension administration. AJ Bell Securities operates as the group’s stockbroking arm. In addition to platform and dealing services, AJ Bell provides third-party SIPP administration and owns AJ Bell Media, a specialist financial publishing business based in London. The group therefore combines consumer investing, adviser-platform administration, pension services, execution and financial information activities rather than operating solely as a retail broker. AJ Bell plc completed an initial public offering in November 2018, valuing the business at approximately £675 million at the time of the offering. Its shares trade on the London Stock Exchange under the symbol AJB, and the company is a constituent of the FTSE 250 Index. AJ Bell remains primarily focused on the United Kingdom, where it competes with other investment-platform and stockbroking providers including Hargreaves Lansdown and Interactive Investor. The brand positions itself around accessible, digitally administered investing and retirement saving, while its adviser businesses emphasize platform functionality, account administration and support for professional intermediaries. AJ Bell has also been recognised as a Which? Recommended Provider in each year from 2019 through 2025. From 2026, AJ Bell Investcentre began offering Lombard lending, enabling eligible customers to borrow against shares or investment portfolios through a facility powered by Firenze. Product availability, fees and eligibility depend on the relevant AJ Bell business and may change over time.
History
AJ Bell was formed in Manchester in 1995 by Andrew, commonly known as Andy, James Bell and Nicholas Littlefair. The company emerged in the UK’s investment and pensions-services market, initially concentrating on infrastructure and administration for financial advisers and investment professionals. This early orientation gave the business experience in handling investment accounts and pension arrangements before it developed a larger direct-to-consumer presence. As online investing became more established, AJ Bell broadened its activities beyond adviser-facing administration. It developed services that allowed individuals to manage investments through online accounts, including share and fund dealing, ISAs and SIPPs. This expansion created a dual-channel model: a consumer platform for people managing their own investments and an adviser platform through which regulated financial advisers could administer client portfolios and retirement accounts. The group’s operations later became organised across several specialist brands. The direct-to-consumer business operates under the AJ Bell name and offers a SIPP, ISA and dealing account. AJ Bell Investcentre is distributed through FCA-authorised financial advisers and supports SIPPs, ISAs and general investment accounts. AJ Bell Platinum provides bespoke SIPP and SSAS services, while AJ Bell Securities functions as the stockbroking arm. The wider group also undertakes third-party SIPP administration and owns AJ Bell Media, a London-based financial publishing business. A major corporate turning point came in November 2018, when AJ Bell plc undertook an initial public offering that valued the company at approximately £675 million. The listing placed the business on the London Stock Exchange under the ticker AJB. AJ Bell later became a constituent of the FTSE 250 Index, reflecting its position as a sizeable listed UK financial services group. After listing, the company continued to develop its consumer and adviser platforms rather than abandoning its original professional-services base. Its proposition combines digital account opening and administration, investment dealing, pension services and intermediary support. The brand has been recognised by Which? as a Recommended Provider for seven consecutive years from 2019 through 2025. From 2026, AJ Bell Investcentre also offered Lombard lending through its adviser channel. The service allows customers, subject to applicable requirements, to borrow against shares or investment portfolios and is powered by Firenze, a UK Lombard lending platform. This development extended the group’s adviser-platform proposition into secured lending alongside its established investment and pension services. AJ Bell remains principally a UK business. Its competitive environment includes direct-investment platforms, stockbrokers, pension administrators and adviser platforms. Its continuing strategy is reflected in a multi-brand structure that separates consumer investing, adviser-distributed services, bespoke pension work, execution and financial publishing while retaining these activities within one listed group.
