The Air Force Institute of Technology (AFIT), also known as the Nigeria Air Force University, is a military technical and higher-education institution in Kaduna State, Nigeria. History
AFIT's institutional history is rooted in the Nigerian Air Force's effort to reduce dependence on foreign technical assistance after the Nigerian Civil War. The conflict and its aftermath left the Air Force responsible for aircraft and weapon systems of increasing variety and complexity. Nigeria needed trained personnel who could maintain aircraft, manage armaments, operate communications equipment, and administer technical supplies. Overseas training opportunities offered by friendly countries were not sufficient for the number of personnel required and imposed substantial foreign-exchange costs. In 1977, the Nigerian Air Force established the NAF Technical and Supply School. The school benefited from support from Dornier of Germany and was intended to create a domestic foundation for the training of technical and supply personnel. In 1979, it was renamed the Technical Training Wing and later became the NAF Technical Training Group. Its responsibilities included basic instruction in aircraft maintenance, armament, communications, and supply management.
