Overview

Air China Limited, generally known as Air China, is the flag carrier of the People's Republic of China and one of the country's three major full-service airlines. The airline is headquartered in Beijing's Shunyi District and operates a network linking Chinese cities with destinations across Asia, the Middle East, Europe, North America, South America, Oceania and Africa. Its principal hubs are Beijing Capital International Airport and Beijing Daxing International Airport, with Chengdu and other Chinese cities serving as important operating bases. The modern Air China brand emerged from the restructuring of the Civil Aviation Administration of China (CAAC) in the late 1980s. Air China commenced operations on 1 July 1988 and assumed primary responsibility for many of China's intercontinental services, including long-haul aircraft and routes previously associated with the national civil-aviation system. The carrier subsequently became part of a wider consolidation of China's state-owned aviation assets. In 2002, Air China, China National Aviation Corporation and China Southwest Airlines were reorganized within the China National Aviation Holding structure, while the present listed entity, Air China Limited, was established in 2003. Air China listed its shares in Hong Kong and London in December 2004 and later became listed in Shanghai. The state-owned China National Aviation Holding Corporation remains its controlling shareholder. Air China is also the principal airline brand within the China National Aviation Group, whose wider interests include aviation-related businesses and airline holdings. The company has maintained strategic relationships with other Chinese and international carriers, including investments and cooperation involving Air Macau, Cathay Pacific and Shenzhen Airlines. The airline's core business is scheduled passenger transportation. It serves domestic routes throughout China and international routes from Beijing and other mainland bases. Its commercial proposition combines a full-service cabin structure, corporate and premium-travel services, airport lounges, connectivity through Star Alliance, and the Phoenix Miles frequent-flyer program. Depending on aircraft and route, its cabins include first class, business class, premium economy and economy class. It also provides air-cargo capacity and related aviation services. Air China's visual identity uses a stylized phoenix associated with traditional Chinese imagery and the idea of an auspicious, elevated journey. The Chinese airline name is written in calligraphy attributed to Deng Xiaoping, while the English name appears as AIR CHINA in the corporate livery. The brand's positioning is closely linked to China's national identity, Beijing's role as a global capital and the carrier's function as an international representative of Chinese civil aviation. Air China joined Star Alliance on 12 December 2007, extending its international reach through coordinated schedules, reciprocal loyalty benefits and partner connectivity. Its route network, fleet, cabin products and schedules evolve with market demand, airport capacity, regulatory conditions and aircraft-delivery plans. Accordingly, individual destinations, aircraft types and onboard amenities should be verified through current company information.

History

Air China's origins lie in the late-1980s restructuring of China's state aviation system. In response to a government decision to separate the operating divisions of the Civil Aviation Administration of China, six major airline entities were created, including Air China, China Eastern, China Southern, China Northern, China Southwest and China Northwest. Air China commenced operations on 1 July 1988 and was assigned a leading role in international and especially intercontinental transportation. It inherited long-haul aircraft such as Boeing 707, 747 and 767 aircraft and took over routes formerly operated within the CAAC system. During the 1990s and early 2000s, China's airline sector moved toward larger corporate groups. A merger plan announced in 2001 called for Air China to acquire China Southwest Airlines. In October 2002, Air China was consolidated with China National Aviation Corporation and China Southwest Airlines in a restructuring that created the foundations of China National Aviation Holding. The present corporate entity, Air China Limited, was registered in 2003 after the reorganization of Air China International and related aviation assets. Air China became a publicly traded company on 15 December 2004, when its shares began trading in Hong Kong and London. It subsequently obtained a Shanghai listing, giving the company access to domestic and international capital markets while retaining state control through its aviation holding company. The airline continued to develop its Beijing-centered domestic and international network and expanded its presence in Chengdu, Shanghai, Shenzhen and other mainland markets. International cooperation became a major part of the brand's development. Air China signed an agreement to join Star Alliance in 2006 and formally entered the alliance on 12 December 2007. The membership connected the carrier with a global network of partner airlines and supported reciprocal loyalty, lounge and transfer arrangements. Air China also developed corporate relationships and equity positions involving other carriers. In 2009 it increased its stake in Air Macau and raised its interest in Cathay Pacific. In 2010 it completed an increase in its Shenzhen Airlines holding and became that carrier's controlling shareholder. The airline invested in network growth, fleet renewal and passenger services during the 2010s. It introduced selected onboard internet services in 2011, tested satellite-based wireless connectivity in 2013 and expanded long-haul operations with aircraft including the Boeing 777-300ER, Airbus A330, Boeing 787 and Airbus A350. New and expanded routes connected Beijing and other Chinese cities with destinations in North America, Europe, Africa, South America and Oceania. The company also developed premium cabins, airport lounges, cargo capabilities and Phoenix Miles, its frequent-flyer program. Air China's public identity combines commercial aviation with national-carrier symbolism. Its phoenix logo was designed by Han Meilin and incorporates imagery associated with Chinese culture; the Chinese name is rendered in calligraphy attributed to Deng Xiaoping. As a member of China National Aviation Group and a state-controlled listed enterprise, Air China continues to serve both domestic transportation needs and China's international aviation links. Its fleet, route map and operating structure remain subject to changing demand, airport infrastructure, regulation, partnerships and aircraft availability.
