Ainokaze Toyama Railway

Ainokaze Toyama Railway is a Japanese third-sector railway company based in Toyama Prefecture. It was established to take over the Toyama Prefecture section of the Hokuriku Main Line, formerly operated by the West Japan Railway Company, in connection with the opening of the Hokuriku Shinkansen extension to Kanazawa. After the shinkansen extension opened in 2015, the conventional line in the region was transferred to local railway operators, and Ainokaze Toyama Railway began operating the relevant section in Toyama. Its services primarily consist of local and regional passenger trains connecting stations within Toyama Prefecture, with links to neighboring railway operators and some through-running arrangements. The company serves commuters, students, and travelers along the Sea of Japan coast. Its principal public role is to maintain regional rail connectivity and provide daily transportation for communities along the line.

Ainokaze Toyama Railway was created as a third-sector railway company during the regional restructuring of conventional railway services in Japan. Following the extension of the Hokuriku Shinkansen to Kanazawa, parts of the former Hokuriku Main Line were no longer to be operated as a conventional trunk route by West Japan Railway Company. Toyama Prefecture and local authorities along the route participated in establishing a new operator to preserve rail services in the prefecture. The company was established in 2012 and began operating the former Hokuriku Main Line section in Toyama after the Nagano–Kanazawa shinkansen extension opened in 2015. Its railway connects eastern and western parts of Toyama Prefecture and serves major local urban nodes. The company focuses on local passenger trains and maintains connections with neighboring railway operators, supporting commuting, education-related travel, and regional mobility. Its role is broader than commercial passenger transport alone, as it also supports local transport policy and the accessibility of communities along the line.
