Overview
Ahern Hotel is a boutique hotel property in Las Vegas, Nevada, located at 300 West Sahara Avenue, near the northern end of the Las Vegas Strip and next to the Allure Las Vegas condominium tower. The property first opened in 2016 as the Lucky Dragon Hotel and Casino, a purpose-built resort designed around an Asian-themed hospitality and gaming concept. After the casino and restaurant operations struggled to attract sufficient traffic, the property was reorganized, closed in stages, and ultimately sold. It later reopened under the Ahern Hotel name, separating the surviving hotel business from the failed Lucky Dragon casino identity. The site was assembled by developer Andrew Fonfa, who had acquired the broader land parcel in 1987. Fonfa originally considered several hotel and condominium concepts for the location. Plans for a second Allure condominium tower were abandoned after the Great Recession and a broader oversupply of high-rise residential development in Las Vegas. The adjacent property was subsequently selected for a smaller hotel-casino project. The Lucky Dragon was announced in 2012 and was developed with participation from William Weidner, a former Las Vegas Sands executive, and other investors. Construction began in 2015. The resort was conceived as a highly focused Asian-oriented destination. Its design used feng shui principles, red architectural glazing, Chinese-first signage, dragon imagery, and the avoidance of the number four in room and telephone numbering. Management expected local Asian-American residents and Asian visitors from California and China to form the core customer base. The resort opened with 203 rooms, including suites, a spa, restaurants, a tea garden, bars, and a 27,500-square-foot casino. Gaming included baccarat, pai gow, sic bo, slot machines, and table games. A large dragon chandelier became the property's best-known visual feature. Despite its distinctive concept, the property was small compared with major Las Vegas Strip resorts and experienced weak customer turnout soon after opening. Staffing was reduced in 2017, entertainment and promotional measures were added, and the casino attempted to expand VIP gaming. A loan default notice was filed later that year. In January 2018, the casino and restaurants temporarily closed while the property underwent reorganization, although the hotel continued operating for a period. The hotel itself closed in October 2018. Don Ahern acquired the property in April 2019 and reopened it later that year as Ahern Hotel. The new identity shifted the property toward boutique lodging and events rather than a casino-led resort. Ahern also discussed converting the former casino area into conference and convention space. The property therefore represents two distinct phases: an Asian-themed casino resort under the Lucky Dragon name and a later independently operated boutique hotel under the Ahern name.
