Overview
AG Vulcan Stettin was a major German industrial enterprise whose principal identity was built around shipbuilding, marine engineering, and, for an important part of its history, locomotive production. Established in 1851 near Stettin, the company began as Schiffswerft und Maschinenfabrik Früchtenicht & Brock, founded by engineers Franz F. D. Früchtenicht and Franz W. Brock. Its first vessel was the small iron paddle steamer Dievenow, built for service between Stettin and Swinemünde. After financial difficulties, the enterprise was reorganized in 1857 as Stettiner Maschinenbau Actien-Gesellschaft Vulcan. The new company continued ship construction while adding locomotive manufacture as a way to diversify its industrial base. Its locomotive department delivered its first locomotive in 1859 and ultimately produced approximately 4,000 locomotives in Stettin before being transferred to Borsig in Berlin. As steam navigation, German overseas commerce, and naval procurement expanded during the late nineteenth century, Vulcan developed from a regional workshop into an integrated heavy-industry and shipbuilding concern. It produced ironclad warships, cruisers, torpedo boats, submarines, merchant vessels, and passenger liners. Its customers and commissioning authorities included the Imperial German Navy, later the German Navy, German shipping companies such as Norddeutscher Lloyd and HAPAG, and foreign naval or commercial operators. Among its best-known ships were the ocean liner Kaiser Wilhelm der Grosse, which won the Blue Riband in 1898, the liners Deutschland, Kaiser Wilhelm II, Kronprinzessin Cecilie, and George Washington, and numerous battleships and cruisers for the Kaiserliche Marine. The Stettin works also built vessels for China, Russia, Greece, Japan, and Uruguay. The growth in vessel size eventually exceeded the physical capabilities of the Stettin facilities. Vulcan therefore established an additional shipyard in Hamburg between 1907 and 1909. From 1911 the combined enterprise operated under the name Vulcan-Werke Hamburg und Stettin Actiengesellschaft. The Hamburg yard broadened the company’s capacity for large naval and commercial projects, including the passenger ship Imperator, the battleship SMS Friedrich der Grosse, and many First World War submarines. The company also became associated with marine-propulsion innovation. Work supervised by marine-engine director Gustav Bauer contributed to Hermann Föttinger’s hydraulic transmission concepts, including the Vulcan Coupling and related fluid-drive systems. An experimental vessel, Föttinger Transformator, demonstrated hydrodynamic transmission technology in 1909, while a later automatic-transmission design by Hermann Rieseler did not enter production. The First World War brought extensive naval work but also industrial and social disruption. A major strike at the Hamburg yard in 1918 lasted a week and ended after the reading of the War Clauses. After the war, German shipbuilders faced reduced naval demand, economic instability, reparations-related constraints, and difficult international competition. Vulcan Stettin went bankrupt in 1928. The Hamburg yard was sold to Howaldtswerke AG in 1930, while the locomotive department had already been sold to Borsig. Both yards had become members of the Deschimag network during the 1920s, but the original AG Vulcan Stettin did not continue as an independent enterprise. A new company using the Vulcan name was established on the former Stettin site in 1939. During the Second World War it started numerous construction projects, including Type VII C submarines, but wartime disruption meant that only a small number were launched and completed. History
The enterprise originated in 1851 as Schiffswerft und Maschinenfabrik Früchtenicht & Brock in Bredow, then a settlement outside Stettin. Its founders, Franz F. D. Früchtenicht and Franz W. Brock, built the iron paddle steamer Dievenow as the first vessel. Financial problems led to a reorganization in 1857 under the name Stettiner Maschinenbau Actien-Gesellschaft Vulcan. Ship construction continued, while a locomotive department was created to broaden revenue and make use of the company’s engineering capabilities. The first locomotive was delivered in 1859, and roughly 4,000 locomotives were produced at Stettin before the department was sold to Borsig. The shipyard expanded steadily as steam-powered shipping and naval procurement grew. Its output came to include ironclads, battleships, cruisers, torpedo boats, merchant ships, and passenger liners. Gustav Bauer supervised Hermann Föttinger’s work on hydraulic transmission, leading to the Vulcan Coupling and related fluid-drive concepts. The experimental Föttinger Transformator demonstrated this technology in a ship in 1909. A later automatic-transmission design by Hermann Rieseler combined a planetary gearbox, torque converter, and locking clutch, but was not commercially produced. The First World War made Vulcan a significant supplier to the Kaiserliche Marine. Its output included torpedo boats, cruisers, battleships, and submarines, but the war also brought labor conflict; the Hamburg yard experienced a week-long strike in 1918. Postwar restrictions and economic turmoil severely weakened German shipbuilding. The Stettin operation entered bankruptcy in 1928. The Hamburg yard was sold to Howaldtswerke AG in 1930, and the locomotive department was sold to Borsig. During the 1920s, both yards had been associated with the Deschimag group. A new company named Vulcan was formed on the former Stettin site in 1939. It started 34 construction numbers during the following years, including 18 Type VII C submarines, although wartime conditions prevented most from being launched and completed. The wartime operation exploited forced labor and maintained a prisoner camp. Prisoners and other members of the workforce engaged in resistance and sabotage, while Polish resistance networks conducted espionage.
