Overview
Admiralty Shipyards is a major Russian shipbuilding enterprise based in Saint Petersburg on the Neva River. Its origins date to 5 November 1704, when Peter the Great established the Galley Yard during the Great Northern War. History
Admiralty Shipyards traces its institutional history to the Galley Yard founded by Peter the Great on 5 November 1704 during the Great Northern War. The facility stood along the Neva River behind the Admiralty building and was administered by the Russian Admiralty. It was renamed Galley Wharf in 1721, became the New Admiralty Yard in 1800, and in 1841 the newer yard began supplementing and then replacing the older Galley Wharf. The name Admiralty Shipyard was adopted in 1908. The yard was a major center of Russian naval construction before the Revolution of 1917. Its recorded output during the imperial period exceeded 1,000 vessels, including 137 large sailing warships, approximately 700 medium and small sailing or oared craft, and more than 100 iron ships. The latter group included armored warships and cruisers. The shipyard's foundry also produced non-maritime works that became part of Saint Petersburg's built environment, including architectural metalwork, bridge components, statuary, and decorative elements for major public buildings. The future of that project became uncertain after the related construction program was effectively cancelled. In December 2022, long-serving general director Alexander Buzakov died suddenly. The company and United Shipbuilding Corporation announced his death without giving a cause.
