Overview
Abu Dhabi Islamic Bank PJSC, commonly known as ADIB, is a major United Arab Emirates bank headquartered in Abu Dhabi. Established as a public joint-stock company in 1997, it was created to provide banking and financial services in accordance with Islamic Sharia principles. The bank commenced commercial operations in November 1998 and was formally inaugurated in April 1999. Its shares are quoted on the Abu Dhabi Securities Exchange. ADIB's business is organized around Sharia-compliant banking for individuals, businesses, institutions and public-sector-related customers. Its activities include current and savings accounts, payment cards, personal finance, home finance, vehicle finance, corporate and commercial financing, trade finance, cash management, treasury services, investment banking and wealth management. Depending on the product, Islamic structures may include cost-plus sales, leasing, partnership or other approved arrangements rather than conventional interest-bearing lending. The bank's products and contracts are subject to its Islamic governance and compliance framework. The United Arab Emirates remains ADIB's principal market and operating base. The bank has also developed an international presence through banking activities in Egypt, Iraq, Qatar, Saudi Arabia and Sudan. Its Egyptian operation followed the acquisition of the National Development Bank of Egypt and began operating under the ADIB name in 2007. ADIB has maintained a branch in Doha since 2011, a Baghdad branch since 2012, and operations in Sudan from December 2012. It opened its first Saudi Arabian branch in 2018. The precise scope of branches, subsidiaries and cross-border services can change and should be checked against current regulatory and annual-report disclosures. The brand combines a conventional retail-bank distribution model, including branches and digital channels, with Islamic financial structures. In the UAE it serves mass-market, affluent and business customers, while its corporate and institutional activities support financing, liquidity management, trade and capital-markets needs. Digital banking and payments have become increasingly important to the customer proposition; in August 2025 ADIB and Visa announced Remit!, a real-time cross-border money-transfer service. ADIB is governed by a board of directors and an executive management team led by a group chief executive officer. The institution is one of Abu Dhabi's notable financial-sector brands and has received recognition in regional listed-company and banking rankings. Wikipedia reported that ADIB ranked 12th in Forbes Middle East's 2025 list of the region's 30 most valuable banks and 27th in its 2025 ranking of the Top 100 Listed Companies. Such rankings are time-specific and should not be treated as a permanent measure of market position.
History
Abu Dhabi Islamic Bank was established on 20 May 1997 as a public joint-stock company under Amiri Decree No. 9 of 1997. Its initial paid-up capital was one billion UAE dirhams, divided into 100 million shares with a nominal value of 10 dirhams per share. The shares were made available for quotation on Abu Dhabi's securities market, establishing ADIB as a listed Islamic banking institution from an early stage. The bank began commercial operations on 11 November 1998. It was formally inaugurated on 18 April 1999 by Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan, then the UAE Minister of Information and Culture. From inception, ADIB's contracts, operations and transactions were designed to comply with Islamic Sharia principles. This positioned the bank within the UAE's expanding Islamic-finance sector while giving it a broad banking mandate rather than limiting it to a single financing product. During its domestic development, ADIB built a UAE banking platform serving retail customers, companies, commercial enterprises and institutions. Its activities expanded beyond basic deposits and financing to include payment cards, trade finance, cash management, treasury, wealth management and investment-banking services. The bank has combined physical distribution with electronic and digital channels as customer preferences and the UAE payments environment developed. ADIB subsequently expanded outside the UAE. It began operations in Egypt in 2007 after acquiring the National Development Bank of Egypt. It has maintained a Doha branch in Qatar since 2011 and a Baghdad branch in Iraq since 2012. The bank officially launched operations in Sudan in December 2012 with the opening of its first Khartoum branch. In 2018 it opened its first branch in Saudi Arabia. These activities gave ADIB a regional footprint, although the UAE remains its central market and headquarters location. International operations, branch status and subsidiary structures are subject to change and should be verified against current disclosures. In the digital and payments area, ADIB continued to develop services intended to make Islamic banking more convenient across channels. In August 2025 it partnered with Visa to launch Remit!, a real-time cross-border money-transfer service. The initiative illustrates the bank's effort to combine its regional banking platform with modern payments infrastructure. ADIB remains listed on the Abu Dhabi Securities Exchange and is generally identified by the ticker ADIB. The bank is led by a board chaired by Jawaan Awaidha Suhail Awaidha Al Khaili and by Group Chief Executive Officer Mohammed Abdelbary, according to the referenced board information. Regional rankings have also continued to identify ADIB as a significant listed financial institution, though rankings and management roles should be checked against the latest official materials.
