Overview
ABS-CBN Corporation is a Philippine media and entertainment company headquartered in Quezon City. It is associated with one of the country's most recognizable television and content brands and has operated across broadcasting, television and film production, news, music, talent management, pay television, digital media, program syndication, and international distribution. The company's modern history began with Bolinao Electronics Corporation, founded in 1946 by American electronics engineer James Lindenberg. Initially involved in radio equipment and broadcasting, the business was renamed Alto Broadcasting System in 1952 after Antonio Quirino became involved and launched DZAQ-TV, the first television station in the Philippines, in 1953. Chronicle Broadcasting Network was established in 1956 by Eugenio Lopez Sr. and Fernando Lopez. The Lopez family acquired ABS in 1957, and the two broadcasting operations subsequently developed into the ABS-CBN group. The ABS-CBN name first appeared on television in 1961, while the corporate name became ABS-CBN Broadcasting Corporation in 1963. ABS-CBN grew into a vertically integrated media business. Its activities came to include free-to-air television, radio, television program production, film production and distribution, music recording, publishing, theatrical and live-entertainment activities, talent representation, cable and pay-TV services, broadband-related operations, digital publishing, streaming, and international television channels. Its content portfolio has included news, public affairs, teleseryes, variety programs, reality formats, films, music, and children's and educational programming. The company has also distributed Filipino content to overseas audiences through The Filipino Channel and related international services. The company suffered a major interruption under martial law. In September 1972, the ABS-CBN network and its affiliate stations were seized and shut down following the declaration of martial law by President Ferdinand Marcos. Many employees lost their jobs, and members of the Lopez family and senior management faced detention or exile. Broadcast facilities were subsequently used by government-aligned broadcasting organizations. After the fall of the Marcos regime, ABS-CBN was relaunched in September 1986 and rebuilt its network, programming operations, and audience reach. During the 1990s and 2000s, ABS-CBN expanded beyond conventional broadcasting. It entered the Philippine Stock Exchange in 1992, developed film and music businesses, created talent and production units, introduced pay-TV channels, and built international distribution operations. In 2007, the company adopted the ABS-CBN Corporation name to signal that its activities extended beyond broadcasting. The organization continued to use ABS-CBN Broadcasting Corporation in some contexts, but the newer corporate name reflected its diversification into content and technology-enabled media. A decisive change occurred in 2020. After the expiration of its legislative franchise, the National Telecommunications Commission ordered the company's free-to-air television and radio operations to stop on May 5. On July 10, the House of Representatives Committee on Legislative Franchises voted against renewal of the company's franchise application. ABS-CBN consequently ended its nationwide free-to-air broadcasting operation and shifted toward content production, licensing, syndication, pay television, digital services, and distribution through partner networks. Kapamilya Channel, iWantTFC, ABS-CBN News, international services, film and television production units, music labels, and talent businesses became more important components of the post-2020 model. ABS-CBN therefore remains an active media company, but it is no longer accurately characterized as the operator of the Philippines' former nationwide free-to-air network.
History
ABS-CBN traces its corporate origins to Bolinao Electronics Corporation, founded on June 13, 1946, by James Lindenberg. The early business assembled radio equipment and later entered radio broadcasting. Lindenberg worked with Antonio Quirino, brother of President Elpidio Quirino, on the development of television broadcasting in the Philippines. In 1952, Bolinao Electronics was renamed Alto Broadcasting System, with Alto Sales Corporation used as its corporate name. ABS launched DZAQ-TV in Manila, and its first full television broadcast took place on October 23, 1953. Chronicle Broadcasting Network was formed in 1956 by Eugenio Lopez Sr. and Fernando Lopez. It began with radio and later added television through DZXL-TV. Eugenio Lopez Sr. acquired ABS in 1957, creating the ownership and operating foundation for the eventual combination of ABS and CBN. The ABS-CBN name was introduced on television in 1961, and the corporate name changed to ABS-CBN Broadcasting Corporation in 1963. The company consolidated its radio and television operations and became a major national broadcaster. Its activities expanded from transmission into television programming, news, entertainment, film, music, talent development, and related media businesses. The network developed a substantial production and distribution system, allowing it to create programming as well as sell or syndicate content. It also built channels and services for Filipinos living abroad. The network was forcibly closed after martial law was declared in 1972. ABS-CBN facilities and affiliate stations were seized, thousands of employees were displaced, and the Lopez family and company executives experienced detention, exile, or political pressure. Government-associated broadcasting organizations used the former facilities during the closure period. Following the 1986 change of government, ABS-CBN returned to the air on September 14, 1986, and rebuilt its national network. The post-relaunch company diversified rapidly. It developed film operations including Star Cinema, music businesses including Star Music, talent management through Star Magic, pay-TV channels, international distribution through The Filipino Channel, and digital and online media. The company's common shares began trading on the Philippine Stock Exchange in July 1992 under the symbol ABS. In 2007, the corporation adopted the name ABS-CBN Corporation to reflect a business that extended beyond broadcasting and increasingly included content, technology, and other media services. In 2020, the company's operating environment changed fundamentally. Its legislative franchise expired, and the National Telecommunications Commission issued a cease-and-desist order on May 5 covering its free-to-air television and radio operations. On July 10, the House committee responsible for legislative franchises voted against renewal of the company's application. ABS-CBN ceased operating its former nationwide free-to-air network and redirected its activities toward content creation, licensing, syndication, pay television, digital distribution, and partnerships with other broadcasters. Its contemporary identity is therefore that of an active Philippine content and media group rather than a conventional nationwide free-to-air broadcaster.
