ABKCO Records developed from Allen Klein’s music-management and rights business. Klein established Allen Klein & Co. in 1961 while working as a business manager for recording artists, including Bobby Darin and Sam Cooke. His later clients and management relationships included the Rolling Stones and the Beatles. In 1968, ABKCO Industries was created as a broader corporate structure covering management, publishing, recordings, film, television, and theatrical production. The name referred to Allen and Betty Klein Company, although Klein also used the phrase “A Better Kind of Company” as a humorous alternative explanation. Later in 1968, ABKCO acquired the Cameo-Parkway Records catalog and a manufacturing facility. The catalog brought together a substantial body of American pop, rock and rhythm-and-blues recordings, including work by Chubby Checker, Bobby Rydell, the Orlons, the Dovells, Question Mark & the Mysterians, the Tymes, and Dee Dee Sharp. ABKCO’s handling of this material became controversial because many recordings remained commercially unavailable for decades. The company’s licensing policy also restricted the use of original masters in some compilations, and several artists re-recorded their former hits for low-cost oldies releases. A more extensive program of Cameo-Parkway releases and remastering began in the 2000s, helping return the catalog to public circulation. ABKCO’s most prominent long-term assets have been its connections to the early Rolling Stones catalog and the Sam Cooke catalog. Until 2009, the company administered the Philles Records catalog under a licensing arrangement with EMI Music Publishing. Litigation has been a recurring part of ABKCO’s history. The company’s dispute with the Beatles followed a publishing-management agreement signed in 1970 and continued after its settlement in 1977. Later disputes included the 2008 case against Lil Wayne over “Playing with Fire” and the rights conflict surrounding the Verve’s “Bitter Sweet Symphony.” Beyond recorded music, ABKCO has maintained film and video interests.
