Abanca

Abanca is a Spanish banking brand with roots in Galicia and a business covering retail banking, corporate banking, private banking, insurance and payments. The brand was introduced in 2014 after the restructuring of NCG Banco and has retained Galicia as its historical core market. It later expanded into Portugal and other markets through acquisitions and organic development, building a banking presence across the Iberian Peninsula. Its customers include individuals, small and medium-sized businesses, large companies, institutions and private-wealth clients. Abanca is operated by Abanca Corporación Bancaria and belongs to the Banesco group. Its international profile remains more regional than that of major pan-European banks.

Abanca's history is closely connected with the restructuring of Spain's banking sector. During the financial crisis of the early 2010s, Spanish savings banks underwent consolidation and restructuring. After the restructuring and ownership changes involving NCG Banco, the Abanca brand was introduced in 2014 as the new commercial identity for the bank's operations. The new brand retained its customer base and branch presence in Galicia while expanding its focus across retail banking, corporate finance and wealth management. Abanca subsequently enlarged its presence through operations and acquisitions in Portugal and other markets, developing from a mainly Galician institution into a banking group with a broader Iberian footprint.
