Blinkit is a leading Indian quick commerce platform focused on rapid delivery of daily groceries, essentials, and other consumer goods, originally founded under the name Grofers before rebranding. It is now a subsidiary of food delivery giant Zomato.

Key moments

  • 2013Founded as Grofers by Albinder Dhindsa and Saurabh Kumar
  • December 2021Officially rebranded from Grofers to Blinkit to emphasize instant delivery promise
  • August 2022Acquired by Zomato in an all-stock deal
  • 2025Holds ~46% market share of India's quick commerce sector, operates in 30+ cities with dark store network

Blinkit competes in India's fast-growing quick commerce space, with key rivals including:

  1. Swiggy Instamart: Swiggy's grocery arm with 26% market share, offering 15-30 minute delivery
  2. Zepto: Another 10-minute delivery platform targeting hyperlocal needs
  3. Amazon Fresh: Amazon's Indian grocery delivery service with broader retail backing

Blinkit's core competitive edge is its early market leadership, established dark store infrastructure, and 10-minute delivery promise, though it has faced regulatory scrutiny over delivery rider safety requirements in 2026.

  • Market leader in India's quick commerce segment with ~46% share
  • Differentiated by ultra-fast 10-minute delivery guarantee
  • Strong synergy with parent company Zomato's food delivery logistics network
  • Faced regulatory pushback in 2026 over aggressive delivery timelines

Blinkit is a prominent player in India's rapidly expanding quick commerce industry, with a brand identity built around the core promise of ultra-fast delivery of everyday consumer goods. Evolving from the early online grocery platform Grofers, the brand rebranded to Blinkit to align with its shift to 10-minute hyperlocal delivery, and was subsequently acquired by Zomato, India's leading food delivery platform, giving it access to extensive operational and financial resources. The brand has carved out a clear niche among urban Indian consumers who prioritize speed and convenience for grocery and essential good purchases.

Blinkit's brand strength is rooted in its early entry into the quick commerce space, which allowed it to build out a robust network of dark stores across major Indian cities ahead of many newer competitors. This first-mover advantage has translated into strong brand recognition, with the 10-minute delivery promise becoming a core differentiator that sets Blinkit apart from slower legacy grocery delivery services.

Despite its strong market position, Blinkit faces ongoing headwinds that impact its overall brand strength, including intense competition from well-funded rivals, as well as recent regulatory scrutiny focused on delivery rider working conditions. The brand's integration into Zomato's larger ecosystem has helped it offset some of these challenges, creating cross-promotional opportunities that drive user growth and retention.

Brand Leadership

Score: 82/100

Blinkit holds a top-three market share position in India's quick commerce sector, benefits from strong consumer brand recognition as a pioneer of 10-minute grocery delivery, and maintains a clear leadership standing among early entrants to the segment, supported by parent company Zomato's extensive industry resources.

Customer Brand Interaction

Score: 78/100

Blinkit engages regularly with customers via its user-friendly mobile app and social media channels, runs frequent targeted promotional campaigns to drive repeat purchases, and leverages Zomato's integrated 100 million+ user base to facilitate seamless cross-service interaction between food and grocery delivery.

Brand Growth Momentum

Score: 75/100

India's quick commerce sector is expanding rapidly alongside rising urban consumer demand for instant delivery services, and Blinkit continues to expand its dark store network and product assortment to capture new market share, though growth has moderated amid intense price and marketing competition from rival platforms.

Brand Financial Stability

Score: 68/100

As a fully owned subsidiary of listed giant Zomato, Blinkit benefits from the parent company's financial backing to support its operations and expansion plans, but it still operates in a capital-intensive sector that has struggled with consistent profitability across the industry, leading to moderate overall brand stability.

Brand Legacy & Age

Score: 70/100

The underlying business was originally founded in 2013 as Grofers, making it one of the longer-standing players in India's online grocery and quick commerce space, with a consistent, focused brand identity since its 2021 rebrand to Blinkit that has built sustained recognition among domestic consumers.

Industry Visibility & Profile

Score: 85/100

Blinkit is one of the most high-profile brands in India's booming quick commerce industry, regularly featured in business and consumer media coverage of the fast-growing segment, and its competitive positioning and ongoing regulatory challenges have kept it top-of-mind for both consumers and industry stakeholders.

Global Brand Expansion

Score: 10/100

Blinkit currently operates exclusively within India's domestic market, with no active cross-border expansion plans or established brand presence outside of its home market, resulting in very limited globalization of the brand to date.

Blink Commerce Private Limited, doing business as Blinkit (formerly Grofers), is an Indian quick-commerce company owned by Eternal Limited.[5][6][7] It was founded in December 2013 and is based in Gurgaon.[8][9]

Customers of the company use a mobile app to order groceries and essentials online, which are sourced from the company's dark stores and delivered in 10 minutes.[10] Blinkit operates in 153 cities in India, as of March 2025.[11]

In 2022, Zomato Limited (now Eternal) acquired Blinkit for US$568 million in an all-stock deal.[12][13]

History

The company, originally named Grofers, was founded in December 2013 by Albinder Dhindsa and Saurabh Kumar,[14] who had first met each other while working for Cambridge Systematics during the late 2000s.[15] The startup piloted in Delhi NCR before expanding to other cities in India.

After seven years of operations as an online grocery delivery service,[16] Grofers introduced express grocery delivery in India in 2021, by building a dark store network. In June 2021, Zomato Limited (now Eternal) acquired a 9.3% stake in Grofers for $100 million.[17] In July 2021, Grofers was reportedly delivering groceries in 15 minutes in Gurgaon.[18] A month later, in August 2021, it introduced 10-minute delivery in 12 large cities.[19][20] By November 2021, the company was delivering 125,000 orders per day.[21]

On 13 December 2021, Grofers changed its brand name to Blinkit[22] in line with its vision to embrace quick-commerce.[23][24][25][26] By the end of 2021, the company had raised about US$630 million from investors including SoftBank, Tiger Global and Sequoia Capital.[27][28][29]

In March 2022, the cash-strapped Blinkit fired 1,600 employees and ground staff, nearly 5% of its total workforce. Soon after, Zomato granted a US$150 million loan to Blinkit and entered talks to acquire it.[30][31] On 24 June 2022, Zomato announced that it would acquire Blinkit for US$568 million in an all-stock deal.[12] The acquisition was completed on 10 August 2022.[13][32]

Services

Blinkit primarily delivers groceries, fresh fruits, vegetables, meat, stationery, bakery items, personal care, baby and pet care products, snacks, and flowers, among others.[33]

Criticism

In August 2021, the company's 10-minute delivery service faced criticism with concerns raised over the safety of delivery partners. CEO Albinder Dhindsa, in a tweet, defended the mechanism behind express delivery and claimed that there had been zero accidents.[34][35]

In June 2022, a Bengaluru-based web development company called Blinkhit filed a trademark infringement lawsuit against Blinkit.[36]

In April 2023, hundreds of Blinkit delivery partners in Delhi NCR, where about half of the company's dark stores were located, went on strike after a revision in payout structure resulted in lower earnings for them. This led to a temporary closure of many dark stores.[37]

In June 2024, the FSSAI conducted a raid on a Blinkit warehouse in Telangana, uncovering multiple food safety violations, including unhygienic storage and handling, expired food products, and packets suspected of infestation.[38][39]
