Overview
The 6555th Aerospace Test Group was an inactive United States Air Force organization that conducted testing, launch management, and operational support for a broad range of guided missiles, ballistic missiles, space launch vehicles, and military payloads. Its work was carried out primarily from Patrick Air Force Base and the Cape Canaveral launch complex in Florida, with related testing also taking place at other U.S. ranges. The organization emerged from the post-Second World War guided-missile testing structure. Its predecessor formations tested pilotless aircraft, guided bombs, tactical missiles, and target drones before the group was activated in December 1950 to replace the 550th Guided Missiles Wing. During the 1950s, its activities included the development and evaluation of the B-61 Matador, SM-62 Snark, IM-99 Bomarc, XSM-64 Navaho, TM-76 Mace, and other aerodynamic missile systems. The Matador became one of its most prominent programs, while the Snark program provided experience with long-range strategic cruise-missile operations. The unit also supported testing associated with the Falcon and Rascal missile programs. As the Air Force moved from experimental guided weapons toward strategic missile and space systems, the 6555th's responsibilities expanded. It supported Atlas and Titan launch vehicles, military satellite payloads, intercontinental ballistic missile-related activities, and heavy rockets used for military satellite deployment. The organization also contributed to NASA's crewed space efforts, including Project Mercury, Project Gemini, and Project Apollo, and participated in military Space Shuttle planning and flight support. These duties placed it at the intersection of weapons development, range operations, launch-vehicle testing, and national space activities. The unit underwent repeated designation and organizational changes. It became a test-and-evaluation group in 1959 and was subsequently aligned with major Air Force ballistic-missile and space-system organizations. In the early 1970s it comprised a commander's office and divisions concerned with support, Atlas systems, and Titan III systems. A Space Transportation System Division was established in 1974 to address Department of Defense Shuttle requirements. Further restructuring in 1975 consolidated launch-vehicle and satellite-payload functions, while the Inertial Upper Stage operations branch was later placed within the launch-vehicle systems structure. After the final Atlas-Agena launch in April 1978, the group's emphasis shifted toward Atlas-Centaur vehicles and Defense Department missions. It transferred to the Eastern Space and Missile Center, the predecessor of the 45th Space Wing, on 1 October 1979. The Air Force inactivated the 6555th Aerospace Test Group on 1 October 1990 and reorganized most of its resources into the 1st Space Launch Squadron and joint task-force arrangements. Remaining organizational traces disappeared in 1992 during the creation of Air Force Materiel Command. By the mid-2000s, related launch and operations missions were being performed by components of the 45th Space Wing, although those later organizations had no direct lineage link to the 6555th Aerospace Test Group.
History
The 6555th Aerospace Test Group developed from postwar United States military guided-missile organizations. Predecessor units, including the 1st Experimental Guided Missiles Group and the 550th Guided Missiles Wing, tested guided bombs, tactical missiles, converted drone aircraft, and early rockets. Their work included JB-2 cruise-missile testing, QB-17 target-drone operations, and evaluation of weapons such as the Felix, Razon, and Tarzon guided bombs. In 1950, predecessor personnel also supported early rocket launches from the Joint Long Range Proving Ground at Cape Canaveral. Activated in December 1950 as the successor to the 550th Guided Missiles Wing, the 6555th initially focused on missile assembly, testing, and launch operations. It added pilotless bomber squadrons in 1951 and 1952 and concentrated heavily on the B-61 Matador, the Air Force's first operational tactical guided missile. The unit was redesignated the 6555th Guided Missile Group in 1953. After the pilotless bomber squadrons moved to Tactical Air Command, the group was discontinued in 1954, while the surviving squadron continued as a research and development test organization. The organization was reconstituted as the 6555th Guided Missile Group (Test and Evaluation) in 1959 and aligned with the Air Force Ballistic Missile Division. During the missile-intensive 1950s it tested or supported programs including Matador, Snark, Bomarc, Navaho, Mace, Falcon, and Rascal. The Snark program was particularly important for long-range strategic missile experience, while the Matador generated hundreds of Cape Canaveral test launches. The group later expanded beyond winged missiles into ballistic missiles, Atlas and Titan launch vehicles, intercontinental ballistic missile-related systems, and payload operations. During the 1960s and 1970s the group's mission became increasingly integrated with the American space program. It supported launch vehicles and military payloads and played a role in NASA's Mercury, Gemini, and Apollo crewed programs. It also supported military spaceflight requirements associated with the Space Shuttle. In 1974 it created a Space Transportation System Division, and in 1975 it reorganized Atlas, Titan III, satellite, and payload functions into dedicated systems divisions. Following the last Atlas-Agena launch in 1978, the organization concentrated on Atlas-Centaur vehicles and Defense Department missions. The group moved to the Eastern Space and Missile Center on 1 October 1979. It received ten Air Force Outstanding Unit Awards during its existence, reflecting its sustained role in missile and space operations. The Air Force inactivated it on 1 October 1990 and redistributed its resources among the 1st Space Launch Squadron and combined task forces. The final remnants were inactivated on 1 July 1992 during the formation of Air Force Materiel Command. Later launch missions performed by the 45th Space Wing and its successor organizations were not a direct continuation of the group's lineage.
