XCMG, formally Xuzhou Construction Machinery Group Co., Ltd., is a Chinese state-owned construction-equipment and heavy-machinery manufacturer headquartered in Xuzhou, Jiangsu. The company is one of the largest producers in China and among the leading construction-equipment groups worldwide. Its portfolio spans cranes, excavators, loaders, concrete equipment, road machinery, mining vehicles, foundation equipment, aerial work platforms, tunnel machinery, environmental equipment, firefighting equipment, port machinery and related components such as hydraulic systems, transmissions and electronic controls. The group’s industrial roots reach back to several mid-twentieth-century enterprises in Xuzhou. A principal predecessor, Huaxing Iron Factory, was established in 1943 and later became Xuzhou Heavy Machinery Factory. Other predecessor operations included factories founded in Jinan and Xuzhou in the late 1940s. These businesses progressively moved into construction machinery: a tower crane was trial-produced in 1957, a 10-tonne steamroller was developed in 1960, and a truck-mounted crane followed in 1963. In March 1989, XCMG Group was formally created by combining three factories and a research institute, making it an early group-company structure in China’s construction-machinery sector. XCMG began internationalizing during the 1990s. In 1992 it became the first Chinese construction-machinery company authorized to conduct independent exports and exhibited at Bauma in Germany. It subsequently formed or participated in joint ventures involving construction machinery, concrete equipment and axles. XCMG Construction Machinery Co., Ltd., the group’s principal listed operating subsidiary, was listed on the Shenzhen Stock Exchange in 1996 under ticker 000425.SZ. The listed company and the wider group are related but should not be treated as identical legal entities. From the 2010s onward, XCMG pursued a broad globalization and technology strategy. It reorganized its operations through the Hanfeng Plan, acquired hydraulic-technology companies AMCA in the Netherlands and Fluitronics in Germany, invested in research and manufacturing facilities in China and overseas, and acquired a majority interest in German concrete-machinery manufacturer Schwing. The group established or expanded facilities, research centers, assembly operations and distribution networks in markets including Germany, the United States, Brazil, India and the Philippines. It reports sales in more than 180 countries and regions, supported by overseas offices, branches, distributors and service centers. XCMG is particularly associated with large lifting equipment, including all-terrain and crawler cranes, as well as excavators and loaders for infrastructure, quarrying and industrial applications. It has also developed very large machines such as the XGC88000 crawler crane, the QAY1600 all-terrain crane and the DE400 mining dump truck. In addition to conventional diesel machinery, the company has pursued connected, autonomous and lower-emission equipment, including cooperation discussions with Vale concerning autonomous and zero-emission mining machinery. Its market positioning combines a broad product range, Chinese manufacturing scale, increasingly international engineering capabilities and a focus on infrastructure, energy, mining and construction customers.

XCMG’s history is rooted in the industrial development of Xuzhou and in the consolidation of several machinery factories and research organizations. One important predecessor, Huaxing Iron Factory, began operating in 1943 and later developed into Xuzhou Heavy Machinery Factory. Other predecessor companies included Jinan Meifeng Pound Factory, founded in 1948, and Xuzhou Shunhe Auto Repair Shop, founded in 1949. These organizations later became, respectively, parts of Xuzhou Construction Machinery Manufacturing Factory and Xuzhou Loader Factory. The predecessor businesses gradually shifted from general industrial production and repair work toward dedicated construction equipment. In 1957, Huaxing completed trial production of a tower crane, establishing an early connection with the product category that would later become central to XCMG. In 1960, the organization developed China’s first 10-tonne steamroller, and in 1963 it produced a 5-tonne truck-mounted crane. These developments reflected the expanding need for domestic machinery to support construction, transport and industrial infrastructure. In March 1989, XCMG Group was formally established in Xuzhou through the combination of Xuzhou Heavy Machinery Factory, Xuzhou Loader Factory, Xuzhou Construction Machinery Manufacturing Factory and Xuzhou Construction Machinery Research Institute. The “three factories, one institute” structure made XCMG an important early group company in China’s construction-machinery industry. In 1992, the group became the first Chinese construction-machinery company authorized to conduct independent exports and exhibited at Bauma in Germany. That year also marked a high-profile inspection by Jiang Zemin, then general secretary of the Chinese Communist Party. XCMG expanded through corporate restructuring and international cooperation during the 1990s. Xuzhou Construction Machinery Co., Ltd. was incorporated in 1993. The company entered joint ventures involving Caterpillar in 1994, Liebherr concrete machinery in 1995 and Rockwell axles in 1996. In 1995 it was reorganized under its current wholly state-owned enterprise structure. Its principal construction-machinery subsidiary, XCMG Construction Machinery Co., Ltd., became publicly listed in Shenzhen in 1996. The enterprise was also selected for national pilot programs concerning modern corporate systems and enterprise groups. A more aggressive international and technological expansion began in the 2010s. In 2011, the Hanfeng Plan reorganized the business into five major operating units. XCMG also cooperated with Venezuela on a local equipment-manufacturing venture and acquired the Dutch hydraulic specialist AMCA and German hydraulic-technology company Fluitronics. In 2012, it completed major industrial bases and a research institute in Xuzhou, while commissioning new facilities for cranes, loaders and concrete machinery. It began developing a research and development center in Krefeld, Germany, and acquired a majority stake in Schwing, a German concrete-machinery manufacturer. The group used acquisitions, overseas manufacturing and research centers to build a wider international platform. XCMG Europe GmbH and a European research center were established from 2013, while procurement, financial-services and international distribution capabilities were expanded. In 2014, XCMG completed a wholly owned manufacturing base in Brazil and established a research center in the United States. Its activities later broadened into environmental equipment, heavy trucks and sanitation machinery. In 2016, it introduced the DE400 mining dump truck, described in the reference material as the largest Chinese-made construction vehicle at that time. XCMG’s later development has emphasized very large lifting machinery, digitalization and new-energy applications alongside its established construction-equipment lines. Its equipment has been used in major infrastructure and energy projects, including high-altitude wind-power installations. By the 2020s, the group operated manufacturing bases and overseas facilities in multiple countries, with products distributed through a large international dealer and service network. It has reported sales in more than 180 countries and regions and cooperation or market reach across most countries participating in the Belt and Road Initiative. A 2021 memorandum with Vale concerning autonomous and zero-emission mining equipment illustrates the company’s effort to extend its capabilities from conventional machinery toward automated and lower-emission industrial systems.
