Overview
Westland Milk Products is a New Zealand dairy company headquartered in Hokitika on the West Coast of the South Island. It began in 1937 as the Westland Co-operative Dairy Company Limited, created through the amalgamation of several smaller regional dairy cooperatives, including Kokatahi, Waitaha, and part of the Arahura Dairy Companies. The organization developed around milk collection and processing in a geographically dispersed rural region, and it remains closely associated with West Coast farming communities. The company manufactures and markets a broad portfolio of dairy-derived products. Its ingredients business includes skim milk powder, whole milk powder, buttermilk powder, milk protein concentrate, whey protein concentrate, casein and caseinates, butter, and anhydrous milk fat. It also produces bioactive dairy ingredients such as lactoferrin and colostrum, together with infant and toddler nutrition products, including bases for stage-one, stage-two, and stage-three infant formula. Consumer-facing products have included the Westgold butter brand, while the company has also been associated with make-at-home yoghurt through EasiYo. Westland remained independent during the major restructuring of New Zealand's dairy sector at the beginning of the twenty-first century. Before 2001, the New Zealand Dairy Board handled the marketing and export of dairy products on behalf of the country's dairy companies. When deregulation led to the creation of Fonterra through the combination of the New Zealand Dairy Group, Kiwi Co-operative Dairies, and the New Zealand Dairy Board, Westland shareholders chose not to join the amalgamation. Westland consequently retained responsibility for its own sales, marketing, processing, and international development. The company expanded its physical and commercial infrastructure during the 2000s and 2010s. It launched Westgold consumer butter in 2004, established a Rolleston storage and sales and marketing site in 2009, and began collecting milk from Canterbury shareholders in 2011. The Rolleston operation later incorporated milk concentration, reverse-osmosis, warehousing, and corporate functions such as customer service, information technology, finance, supply chain, human resources, and milk collection. Westland acquired full ownership of EasiYo in 2010 and entered infant nutrition manufacturing in 2012. A dedicated Dryer 7 facility for infant and toddler nutritionals followed in 2013. In 2014, the company opened its first overseas office in Shanghai, reflecting the growing importance of China and wider Asian markets for New Zealand dairy ingredients and nutrition products. Westland's milk supply is drawn from farms across the West Coast, extending from the Karamea area in the north to Haast in the south, as well as from farms throughout Canterbury. Its principal processing factory is in Hokitika, while its main warehouse and concentration operations are located near Rolleston, south of Christchurch. The company also maintains a China office in Shanghai. Its food-safety and quality-management activities are organized around FSSC 22000, an internationally audited system covering functions ranging from milk collection and processing to stores, maintenance, and administration. On 18 March 2019, Yili Group, a major Chinese dairy company, agreed to acquire all of Westland's equity. Westland shareholders approved the transaction on 4 July 2019, making Westland a wholly owned Yili subsidiary. The acquisition changed the company's ownership while preserving its New Zealand manufacturing and milk-supply base. Westland is described as one of New Zealand's largest dairy processors, ranking behind Fonterra and Open Country Dairy and at a similar level to Synlait in the cited market comparison. In addition to its commercial activities, the company has supported local infrastructure and community organizations, including the Blue Spur Water Treatment Plant expansion and sporting, rescue, and family-support…
History
Westland Milk Products traces its origins to the cooperative dairy movement on New Zealand's West Coast. In 1937, the Westland Co-operative Dairy Company Limited was formed by combining several smaller local cooperatives, including Kokatahi, Waitaha, and part of the Arahura Dairy Companies. The resulting organization created a larger platform for collecting, processing, and marketing milk from farms in a region characterized by dispersed settlements and challenging geography. For much of the twentieth century, New Zealand dairy companies operated within a national marketing framework. The New Zealand Dairy Board handled dairy marketing and exports on behalf of the country's dairy companies, limiting the extent to which individual processors controlled their own international sales. This changed in 2001, when the dairy industry was deregulated and the New Zealand Dairy Group, Kiwi Co-operative Dairies, and the New Zealand Dairy Board combined to form Fonterra. Westland's shareholders elected not to participate in the merger. The decision left Westland as an independent dairy company responsible for its own product development, commercial relationships, marketing, and exports. Westland broadened its activities in the 2000s. In 2004 it launched Westgold, a consumer butter brand. In 2009 it established a major Rolleston site near Christchurch, initially serving storage and sales and marketing functions. The site subsequently expanded to include milk concentration, reverse-osmosis processing, warehousing, and a range of administrative and supply-chain departments. In 2010 Westland acquired full ownership of EasiYo, an Auckland-based make-at-home yoghurt business. In 2011 it began collecting milk from Canterbury shareholders, strengthening its supply base beyond the West Coast. The company moved into higher-value nutrition products during the following decade. It began manufacturing infant nutritional products in 2012 and launched the Westpro Nutrition range. In 2013, it constructed Dryer 7 as a dedicated facility for infant and toddler nutritionals. This investment supported the production of infant formula bases and other specialized dairy nutrition ingredients. Westland also expanded its international presence, opening an office in Shanghai in 2014. China became an important commercial market for New Zealand dairy products, and the Shanghai presence supported customer and market activities in the region. Westland's operating network is centered on its Hokitika processing plant and its Rolleston facilities. Milk is sourced from farms throughout the West Coast, from the Karamea area in the north to Haast in the south, and from Canterbury. The company manufactures commodity and specialty dairy ingredients, butter, bioactive products, and infant nutritionals. Its quality system is based on FSSC 22000 and is independently audited against the international food-safety standard. The company's independent period ended in 2019. On 18 March that year, Chinese dairy group Yili agreed to acquire 100 percent of Westland Milk Products, subject to shareholder approval. Westland shareholders approved the transaction on 4 July 2019, and Westland became part of Yili. The transaction brought the New Zealand cooperative-style dairy processor into a larger international dairy group while retaining its New Zealand sourcing and production operations. Westland has also maintained a community role through support for local infrastructure, rescue services, family-support organizations, and junior sports across the West Coast and Canterbury.
