WDTN

WDTN is a local broadcast television station licensed to Dayton, Ohio, and operating on virtual channel 2. The station is affiliated with NBC and serves the Dayton metropolitan area and surrounding parts of western Ohio. Its studios and offices are located on South Dixie Drive in Moraine, while its transmitter operates from a site near Frytown Road in Jefferson Township. WDTN shares certain technical and operational arrangements with WBDT, a CW-affiliated station licensed to Dayton and owned by Vaughan Media. The stations share facilities, and WDTN also participates in a channel-sharing arrangement involving WBDT and WKOI-TV, an Ion Television station licensed to Richmond, Indiana. The station began broadcasting on March 15, 1949, under the call sign WLWD. Its original license was awarded to the Crosley Broadcasting Corporation, the Cincinnati-based owner of WLW radio and several television stations. WLWD was created as part of the interconnected WLW Television Network, whose stations exchanged regional programming and were linked by microwave facilities. The Dayton station initially operated on channel 5, but a nationwide and regional realignment of television allocations moved it to channel 2 in April 1953. The change gave the station a durable identity associated with the number 2, although its call sign remained WLWD for more than two decades. During its early years, WLWD carried NBC programming along with selected programming from the DuMont and ABC networks. It also aired shows produced by its Cincinnati sister station, including regional variety, talk, music, and public-affairs programming. The Dayton station later became notable as the early home of Phil Donahue's locally produced talk program, which was subsequently distributed nationally. In 1968, Crosley's broadcasting operations adopted the Avco name. Avco sold WLWD in 1975 as it withdrew from television broadcasting, and Grinnell College acquired the station. The college changed the call sign to WDTN in 1976 and upgraded the station's transmission facilities. WDTN changed network affiliations twice in its history. In January 1980, it switched from NBC to ABC while WKEF moved in the opposite direction. The move reflected ABC's effort to obtain a stronger Dayton affiliate and WDTN's comparatively broad signal coverage. Hearst acquired the station in the early 1980s, but ownership restrictions related to signal overlap later led to another sale. WDTN was transferred to Sunrise Television in 1998 and became part of LIN TV after Sunrise merged with LIN in 2002. On August 30, 2004, WDTN returned to NBC after 24 years as an ABC affiliate. The change followed broader affiliation agreements involving NBC, ABC, LIN TV, and Sinclair Broadcasting Group. WDTN subsequently became operationally linked with WBDT through shared-services and joint-sales arrangements. Those arrangements brought the stations together at WDTN's Moraine facilities, although the licensing and ownership structure remained separate. Media General acquired LIN TV in December 2014, and Nexstar Broadcasting Group acquired Media General in January 2017. The transaction placed WDTN within the Nexstar Media Group portfolio. Today, WDTN's principal public-facing output consists of local news, weather, traffic, sports, community reporting, NBC network programming, syndicated content, digital publishing, and streaming or mobile extensions of its local coverage. As with many American network affiliates, the station's distribution also depends on retransmission agreements with cable, satellite, and virtual multichannel providers.

The Federal Communications Commission awarded the construction permit for Dayton's first television license to Crosley Broadcasting Corporation on April 4, 1947. The station launched on March 15, 1949, as WLWD on channel 5. It operated from a former skating-rink property on Dixie Drive in what is now Moraine, establishing the studio location that remains associated with the station. WLWD formed part of Crosley's WLW Television Network, alongside WLWT in Cincinnati and WLWC in Columbus. The stations shared programming through microwave links and carried NBC as their principal network affiliation, while also presenting selected DuMont and ABC programs. Regional shows from Cincinnati, including variety and music programs, were important components of the schedule. WLWD also originated the early version of Phil Donahue's talk show, which later became a nationally distributed program. The FCC's 1952 allocation changes reassigned WLWD from channel 5 to channel 2. The move occurred on April 27, 1953, and required a shorter transmitting tower to limit interference and signal overlap with nearby Crosley stations. The station lost its DuMont affiliation in 1955 and gradually reduced its ABC programming as Dayton's WONE-TV, later WKEF, assumed the ABC relationship. Crosley renamed its broadcasting operations Avco Broadcasting in 1968. When Avco exited television in the mid-1970s, WLWD was sold separately because of federal restrictions on common ownership of stations with overlapping signals. Grinnell College purchased the station for $13 million in June 1975, an unusual arrangement that made the Iowa college the owner of a commercial television station. The call sign changed to WDTN after the transaction closed in 1976. Grinnell subsequently improved the station's transmission facilities, including increasing the tower height and operating power. WDTN moved from NBC to ABC on January 1, 1980, in an affiliation exchange with WKEF. The change reflected ABC's search for a stronger Dayton outlet. Hearst acquired WDTN in the early 1980s, and Hearst-Argyle Television later became involved in the station's ownership. Because Hearst-Argyle also controlled the nearby Cincinnati station WLWT, regulatory restrictions led to WDTN's sale to Sunrise Television in 1998. Sunrise merged with LIN TV in 2002. In 2004, network affiliation arrangements led WDTN back to NBC, effective August 30. LIN TV later began operating CW affiliate WBDT through shared-services and joint-sales agreements. WBDT's operations were consolidated with WDTN in Moraine, creating a shared local television operation while the stations retained distinct licenses and brands. Media General acquired LIN TV in 2014. The Federal Communications Commission approved the transaction subject to conditions affecting the WDTN-WBDT joint-sales structure. Nexstar Broadcasting Group then acquired Media General, with the transaction completed in January 2017. WDTN has since operated within Nexstar Media Group. Its present role is that of a full-service local NBC affiliate, combining over-the-air broadcasting with cable and satellite distribution, online news, mobile content, advertising, weather services, and community-oriented reporting.
